For about a couple of weeks, there has been a lot of delay between what I type and when it actually appears. It's maddening! I have not changed any of my Firefox settings. I did a 'refresh' about an hour ago. I am not seeing any network activity that I cannot recognize. I d/l'd 'Malwarebytes' and ran it..."no threats". MS Defender has always been on & protecting me. I have never had this situation occur before and am hoping for some help (5 to 10 seconds to wait for what you've keyed in is not fun).

Version is the same. I have not restarted or powered off the desktop. Yet, there is not any lag when typing within the browser today. I have no knowledge why it started delaying or why without any system or browser change (after yesterday's refresh...the delay still existed), the day after reporting...the issue no longer exist.

THE DELAY HAS RETURNED. I have turned off hardware acceleration: Settings> General tab & scroll down to performance (both 'Use recommended performance' & 'Use hardware acceleration..' are unchecked. The searches return with versions 3. and 33. I am still at 127.0.2 and it's the latest. Summary: no unknown network activity, always ran with Microsoft Defender (until Malwarebytes disabled as it ran....no issues found) and is without issues. As typed earlier: hardware acceleration is off. This has recently occurred: no Firefox settings changed (I did a refresh last weekend); no o.s. change... seconds 5 to 10+ to see character just typed...input with corrections after the fact is maddening... seeking help with this issue, typing delay only on browser. Notepad, e.g., has no delay

Philip, Have you tried:

  • restarting your computer?
  • closing any background Keyboard software, if your keyboard has its own application?
  • testing in troubleshoot mode?
  • testing in a new profile?
  • testing in Windows safe mode?
  • uninstalling then reinstalling Firefox?

Also, does this delay occur only in edit fields? does it occur when, for example, you press ctrl+T to open a new tab or ctrl+shift+O to open the bookmarks library?

restarting your computer? Since delay's 1st occurrence, restarted & powered off/on closing any background Keyboard software, if your keyboard has its own application? n/a testing in troubleshoot mode? done in third reply...no difference testing in a new profile? no. but is active signed in for sync'ing testing in Windows safe mode? no uninstalling then reinstalling Firefox? no, refresh had no effect.

I'll try to narrow it down by killing background apps. They've been here long before this delay thing started and had no issue. But something has happened and it is not a Window update...newest is a quality and it installed about a week before this awful delay thing.

Summary: Delay is still happening. Refreshed last week, troubleshooting mode today, un'checked performance/hardware acceleration today, & still delay..doing this reply is taking forever. Note: delay is on desktop only, Android Firefox: no issue

Did you check that you haven't accidentally enabled some Windows accessibility feature?

In the third post you mention disabling hardware acceleration,. Just to check, did you try the full troubleshoot mode, as in selecting "Troubleshoot Mode…" from the help menu?

Refreshing creates a new profile but then copies some data from the original profile. So it might be worth trying a clean new profile to completely rule out anything in the original profile.

Just somthing to possibly try if disabling apps does not lead to an answer.

Also, just curious to know if the delay only happens when typing in edit fields, or also when you use keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+t?

Thanks cor-el. No accessibility other than prt scn to activate capture. All counts are 0 except misspells at 8. Currently, 4 apps up front and running. Firefox is one of the four with 19 instances. VPN has not changed and was active with FF before the delay. Task Mngr is a temp and not suspect. 18% processor, 49% memory... I'll close out last active app that's relatively new as see...

TechHorse, yes, from menu bar top left> Help> Troubleshoot Mode.... Profile, now better understood, thnx

to go to process of closing backgrd running apps/features as a process of elimination. A wipe & new install won't be too much...bookmarks in such sync'd to other devices.

ctrl+t, new tab is not instant

Throwing more onto the pile:

  • CTF Loader (ctfmon) running?
  • Run DISM+sfc?

I have toggled Windows Game mode to 'off' With the fourth app NOT running, input from the keyboard to Firefox is without delay. I had hoped/thought, turning off hardware acceleration would of fixed the delay issue. The computer was not taxed (18% processor, 49% memory), yet the delay continued. I do not have a fix, but know the cause and will have to adapt.

cor-el, TechHorse, thanks for your assistance...
