Don't like the search bar at the top of the page but can't find a way to delete it. I already have a search bar when I open my browser so that is totally redundant. It takes up valuable room on my screen that I need for what I'm working on. And I can't find out from the web how to delete this. Please help!

What's your computer system and Firefox version?

Are you talking about a Firefox toolbar, or someone else's? (Bing, Yahoo, Google . . . . . .)

Is this the search bar at the top of the about:newtab page that shows the tiles with most visited websites?

Add code to the userContent.css file.

@-moz-document url(about:newtab){
 #newtab-margin-top,
 #newtab-margin-bottom,
 #newtab-search-container {display:none!important}
}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

  • create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
  • use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userContent.css file in the chrome folder (file name is case sensitive)
  • paste the code in the userContent.css file in the editor window
  • make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userContent.css.
    otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userContent.css.txt file

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Computer is Windows 10; Firefox is the latest one. I got a new drive and just downloaded.

I actually stumbled onto it again and got rid of it since posting this, but because I stumbled onto it, I don't know how to do it again! It's on the computer, not on a browser. There was a dropdown menu where I could choose Firefox, Chrome, or IE. Still don't need that bar taking up space, so I'd like to know how to get rid of it next time it comes back :)

Cor-el -- Appreciate your answering, but if I have to spend hours learning how to fix this, I'd rather download a different operating system! I'm not a tech person, so when you start talking codes and multiple places I have to go and read tech stuff, my eyes kind of glass over!

When you use that search bar, what search engine is used? Uninstall that program from the computer.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

The Search Bar box with the magnifying glass?.

You can remove it while Customize window is open.

Search Engines in Firefox are not installed this way. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-or-remove-search-engine-firefox

Fred, I did try that. Doesn't work. It seems to go with any browser and related to Windows 10.

James -- I tried extensions and add-ons, but couldn't find it anywhere in the browsers. It's in Windows 10.

On January 21 I posted this (see above):

"I actually stumbled onto it again and got rid of it since posting this, but because I stumbled onto it, I don't know how to do it again! It's on the computer, not on a browser. I don't know how I got rid of it, and don't know how to get it back, so no, I can't take a screen shot. But if you know where the setting is (I think it's in Windows somewhere), I'd like to know since it had gone away once and then spontaneously returned. If it spontaneously returns again I won't know what to do. I might as well learn now.
