WebExtension does not work on local IP addresses (10.***.***.***)

I tried the example at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/Your_first_WebExtension and all worked fine and dandy. I then tried to change the match url in the manifest.json to a local IP address (beginning with 10). I specified it explicitely, no wildcards. It did not work. Is this disabled because of some security concerns? How can i enable it?
