Clicking an attached Excel file opens my Personal workbook, not the file I attached

I like to check that I've attached the right file to an e-mail. However, if I open a sent mail with an Excel file, Excel opens my Personal workbook only - not the file I want. I've just upgraded to Excel 2016, and didn't have the problem before. I suspect it's Microsoft at fault, not Thunderbird (which I really like): but is there a known solution?

never heard of the problem before. But a read this http://excelribbon.tips.net/T012159_Automatically_Hiding_the_Personal_Workbook.html

That sounds to my like the workbook is supposed to be hidden.

It doesn't seem to matter whether Personal is visible or hidden: the workbook attached to the e-mail still doesn't open. I keep Personal unhidden, but with a note in a cell in the middle of the visible section that it is the Personal workbook, as a reminder. Thanks for the link, though - worth a read.

Save the attachment to your desktop. Double click it. Are you seeing the same thing?

By taking Thunderbird out of the equation this will check to see if it is a Thunderbird or Excel issue.

If I save the sheet to the PC, it then opens normally. Only Excel files are a problem: docx, pdf, jpg all open with the correct programs directly from e-mail attachments. I think it has to be an Excel issue: thanks for the help, people.

On the toolbar > Options> Attachments > Incoming

Delete whatever is there for handling excel sheets. Restart Thunderbird and try again.

"Delete whatever is there for handling excel sheets." Sorry, tried that, too! But thanks, it was surely worth a try.

FYI: I solved it - By doing an office "repair" through Control Panel - Programs and Features. I hadn't previously thought to try that because the suite was so recently installed, and because the other Office programs didn't have the problem.
