Upgrading to the latest version massively screwed up the address bar. How do I get back to what I assume was the default?

I upgraded and now stuff is massively messed up.

Until yesterday, if I started to type an address (for example, the letter "g") then I got all of the websites from my history that started with the letter "g." Things were dead simple. Now I get tons of stuff, most of which seems to be addresses that include the letter "g" rather than websites that start with the letter "g." I don't believe I ever did anything special re configuration but maybe I did. Plus, I no longer get IP addresses but rather the "title" of the pages, which of course aren't necessarily related to the IP address I want.

How do I get back to what I had? The recent update seems to have overwritten whatever settings I had before.
