How do I stop multiple Firefox windows from shuffling on their own?

Because of my work, I always have multiple windows and multiple tabs open all the time. The windows on the taskbar at the bottom will shuffle (switch places) randomly, so I have a hard time finding what I want. This happens multiple times in a day, and is extremely frustrating. Why is this happening and what can be done to fix it?

Just so you know, I have this same issue with two computers, one is new and running Windows 10 and the other is older and running Windows 7. They both have the newest version of Firefox.

I appreciate any suggestions you can give, and thank you for your replies.

P.S. After realizing that I misspoke in my original question, I've modified it above.

Do you have any 'tab' add-ons? Try disabling them.

Thanks for the response, but I don't have any add-ons at all.

Hi   !
Must be really frustrating   !
Just to make sure:
When you say   'tabs'   you don't mean   'tiles'   by any chance, do you   ?
In that case of course all you have to do is click on the   'drawing pin'  ('thumbtack'  in the US)   and it'll turn blue, meaning:   it's pinned and won't be going anywhere.
But you probably already did that;   didn't you   ?

Nope, not tiles... tabs. But thanks for the response anyway. Yes, it is VERY frustrating.

Let's have a go at this:
When your on the site with all those tabs;   make that your home page:   3-bar menu > Options > General > use current page.
I can't make any promises,  but it just might work; &nbsp who knows   ?

Thanks, but I'm not sure what you mean. This doesn't happen on a certain site. It randomly happens though out the day as I surf to many sites and have many pages and tabs open. Am I missing something in what you're saying?

No;   you're definately not missing anything:   I was   !
I thought this might only be happening on one particular page on which you had all these open tabs.
That's not going to work then either   --   bummer   !
I sure hope somebody else will come to your rescue;   I've been racking my brain about this, but simply can't think of anything that might work .
So sorry   !

I was having a thought (and boy does my head hurt). It could be; not that the tabs are moving, but new tabs are opening and pushing things around.

That makes soooo much sense   (not the hurting head, mind you   ! )   !

I should clarify something. It's actually the separate FireFox windows that get shuffled around on the taskbar at the bottom of my screen. (These windows have multiple tabs open, but the tabs themselves within a window don't move.)

I corrected and re-stated my question at the top.

When you exit Firefox and start it up again, restoring your previous session automatically, the sequence of windows after the first, which always seems to be the same, changes. I'm not sure of the exact algorithm but there was some discussion about it in this thread: 40.0.2 update changes order of Window menu items on Mac. How to control or undo this? There might be other threads, too.

In this bug report, someone says it worked in Firefox 39 and Firefox 41, so it's possible a change was made that was in Firefox 40, not in Firefox 41, but in Firefox 42 and later. You would think that would help track it down, but... so far I don't see that anyone has found it.

You can sign in to Bugzilla (different login system from this site) and "vote" for the bug to be fixed. This page has more info on voting: Voting. See also: Bugzilla Etiquette.

Meanwhile, to maintain your sanity, I guess exit Firefox as infrequently as possible?

Thanks for your response. That's very interesting. It's possible that could be at least partially what's happening with me.

There is one difference that I didn't see mentioned. That is, that it usually does NOT happen when I'm shutting down FF or after a crash. What happens is that I'll be working with a lot of windows and tabs open, then I get the "Firefox is not responding" message for several seconds. After that, when it comes back the windows are all shuffled. Sometimes I can literally watch them shuffle before my eyes. So it's not only when I restore after a FF crash or shut-down.

That's so strange.

I wonder why Firefox is not responding? Have you skimmed through this article to see whether anything might help: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix.

Hmm... no, I haven't, but I'll take a look at it. Thanks.
