= Macbook gets HOT - Fan races FF stops - uses 100% + of CPU ?
Hello everyone:
I got this macbook
13" early 2008 Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Graphics Intel GMA X3100 144 MB Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Firefox 39.04
I have personas and classic theme restorer installed so I can have the tabs not be on top, and a non moving squirrel picture on the frame. I got the computer used last year, maybe the year before, It's been lightning fast, but I use it for business social media stuff, 30 twitter pages open to monitor hashtag pages. while loading other pages I get script slow errors,
The computer gets HOT the fan is beginning to make noise because it always runs. Even if I open one ONE ebay page (in FF) and let it sit there, it will within 20 seconds stop responding and get HOT. As I write this on safari the machine is running fine fan at slow idle, room temp 82 Humid no A/C.
The computer was wiped, new OS NEW FF 39 new when I set up this machine. When using FF along with Safari or Photoshop 12 I think, they can all be on and working, but FF will freeze, the others will work, and the fan runs so fast it lifts the machine off the table.
I have read and tried so many of the message board fixes, including the about:config tell the flash player not to load in each page repeatedly if not used, no help. I take a screen pic, and then restore it to original if it don't work. Something about a plug-in container. Activity monitor also says FF uses more than 450MB ram Really….? Normal….? 1 tab…? Well safari has 418 MB …..
Done some of the fix it's on the FF help pages, turned off plugins safe-mode still spins up the turbines. Not installed a new FF as there does not seen to be a real fix in doing that from what I have read.
Had this machine for a while, use to work fine, lightning fast, no fan unless watching a movie, now I don't even try using youtube…..
No other add-ons readers, tool bars etc. installed. Ever. I basically do the same thing all the time. Also for some reason even though flash is always manually updated, videos even GIF's on twitter now place an error in the center of the post "your browser does not support video playback"
How can the dam thing use more than 100% of the cpu resources anyway……? WTF ???? Using some of the CPU from tomorrow ????? Some kind of payday loan FF has for the CPU ????
Load_payday_CPU_firefox_interest-rate_120%_ :true ??? Where is it ?
I can load other info if anyone gives me an idea where to get it terminal, activity monitor, air traffic control, what have you.

Sorry I did not know that some of the crashes are not being reported.

I can see many are or seem to be flash player crashes.
Hope this is helping.
Also, a comment made above about quitting a program, and waiting at least 30 seconds before attempting to restart it, letting it quit completely.
The program would sit for 20 minutes or more if I let it sit there and still not fully quit.

This is strange. In an earlier report, this was reported; Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version: 22.0.0.192 And I gave you the link to update the player. Version: 22.0.0.209
In one of the latest reports, this is reported; Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version: 17.0.0.188
What goes on here?
Fred, I did not try looking t all those reports but the date processed may not be close to the date of the crash. (Fx version and time since install may give clues) Not sue if that helps explain any apparent discrepancy.
squirrelboy09, I will leave it up to you and Fred, but it may turn out easier troubleshooting this bottomup and so in brand new profile with the latest version of Firefox. At least as a troubleshooting step try doing that and in Firefox's safemode with all plugins disabled. Does that prevent crashes ? It may at least give crash signatures we find more useful. It may even prevent or ease the fan racing and overheating.
As Fred is aware it is relatively easy to install an additional version of Firefox for test purposes, (although I am not sure there is a Mac equivalent of portable).

This is strange. In an earlier report, this was reported; Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version: 22.0.0.192 And I gave you the link to update the player. Version: 22.0.0.209 In one of the latest reports, this is reported; Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version: 17.0.0.188 What goes on here?
If you look at a few posts earlier, I said as I was sending crash reports that were old, and not sent at the time of the crash - As I sent them they were being sent with today's date, 8-31-16, you will see them all around 9:30PM - 10:30PM, The post before, had the numbers, and original crash dates if that was of any help.
All Flash Player updates have been installed as the update became available, and a notification arrived on my screen.
I know you guys all think the latest updated flash, and FF will fix everything. But look, the overheating, memory hog, and in my case crashes have been going on from flash 17 -to - 22 and will it be going on from flash 22 - to - 44 + - Yah you bet-yah. It's something else.
You guys ever seen that definition of insanity floating around the internet.
I can see you guys really only have 2 ponies in your barn, update FF to the latest, and update flash. i have been updating, re-installing since Win-95, there are too many similar threads that have the same stories on them with no solution, they just get closed.
I'm just going to live with it I guess, It does not look like you guys are even reading some of what I am posting as I see the crash report days changing.
FF 1.8 on win-98 with 20 windows open might have been slow, but it didn't crash as much as it does today.
I appreciate all the hard work writing these very complicated programs, and I love the CSS Inspector, and the fact that these programs can run with 50 windows open, really I do. I guess I just apply too much stress to the current design.
I'm sure some time in the future I'll get a newer machine and get a newer FF and flash 30+ and see how it all works. But not today…

No I can not guarantee updating will solve everything or even anything. However
- Old software is insecure - Some old flash was for instance vulnerable to drive by ransomware that could encrypt your computer and speak nicely to you with a synthesised voice asking for $500 in bitcoins.
- We only support the latest Firefox versions - Yes we will try to help you use old versions if that's what you choose, but for instance you will not get bug fixes, or any Developer attention unless the problem also affects Releases & pre releases.
If you can show a problem exists with supported software and it gets fixed either because of a bug fix or because its cause is discovered it may still help you while you run old versions. I sometimes use old versions of software and old versions of Firefox, and I know at least one top active contributor only uses relatively new versions in order to test and answer support problems.
No one is stopping you from using old software, as long as you are aware of the risks, but I am pointing out it is almost impossible to help you unless you will also test with updated software in minimal configurations.
Sure your problem may only show up with some odd combination of add-ons or something, but without the control situation of knowing what happens by comparison with a basic configuration there is not much we can do.
Google searches don't help much there is a 1/2 billion user base, Flash Player is a massive problem. If you search for problems with Firefox & Flash you are bound to get millions of hits. That self confirmation problem also occurs but to a lesser extent where there are not many problems. If anything works 99% of the time then on 1/2 billion there are many millions of problems. That does not show it is a problem for the majority just that google is good at finding the vocal 1%

I read a lot, I am aware of all the cool horror stories about people getting their computer hacked, and held hostage - For the most part, funny as hell.
As many computers as I have had, the only virus ever infected us was on my wife's '98 box, years ago, and I removed it manually.
I am aware that most problems are caused by phishing, or something installed by the user - and they most likely were scammed into it.
No I don't expect anyone to fix my old software, And yes I do try and send in comments, descriptions of problems, and turn on all the feedback stuff on programs to make the next version better. Especially for you open source guys, what you do if just fantastic. I wish I was talented enough to do programing like you guys do. When I was a kid I had a C-64 with an Assembler Cartridge and did machine code for it, Had a IMSAI 8080, did machine code 8080A, Z80, 8086, Basic, a little php now, just to tweek wordpress, and a little pearl, I think it was called…. Nothing like you guys do.
I understand that with billions of users, there is a good chance that only in the publics hands will every crazy combination of browser, OS, plugin, add-on, etc be tried. I get it, you can fix the things that effect the greatest number of installs.
I have tried my best to look at the crash reports I sent in, and mine have only 2 ad-on's listed, and the plus-in flash player, which now is "ask to activate" but still on some tabs I get moving images, so who knows what's going on there…. I have not looked into if it's flash, .gif, or something else on those tabs. At this point not interested if flash is now self activating.
And I accept at this point I'm going to have a wall in performance on this machine with my old FF on it.
Before you go, tell me this - When was the CSS inspector last updated ? What FF version for Mac OS 10.7 has the most updated ?

Hi !
Now that I have been using the activity monitor daily, I have noticed on several occasions, FF will be not responsive, and the activity will remain high for FF but the little box which opens if you click on the firefox line in the monitor, I have been leaving open, will say "(terminated)" And the Sample, and Quit boxes will not be active, grey-d out.

Hi squirrrelboy09 Just in case I was not clear. I am only suggesting you use a clean profile and up to date version for troubleshooting. I have not re-read all this thread but it is easy to have multiple Firefox versions installed and multiple profiles, you can assuming the computer has the resources (may not with 80 open windows each) run multiple Firefox instances at the same time.
Your Mac is supported up to the current Fx48 Release. After that if you need critical security updates drop back to Fx45 ESR.
I lose track of the current tools. I tend to have multiple versions, and also sometimes tools not on by default in the Release can be turned on. I do not recall much change in the Inspector & Style Editor recently. The Style Editor 3d view is dropped back to being an add-on after Fx46 mainly due to multi-process incompatbility issues 3D_View
