I occasionally, actually quite often, get the Your Connection is Not Secure screen. It happens in the middle of working with the site. May want to order something from Amazon, or ask a question from Mozilla and part way through I get this message. Tried ALL the the suggestions but can not get any to work. I can add the exception only after waiting at least 30 minutes, sometimes. There are times when I can't add the exception at all. Sometimes I can go to another site and sometimes all sites have this same problem. There are times I can shut down the computer and restart it, and it fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't. Just gets very frustrating. I know that everyone is trying to make things easier and "safer", but after retiring from the computer industry after over 40 years, it seems that everything gets worse and not better!!

Hmm, usually Firefox is consistent about whether it finds a website's certificate or procotols to be objectionable. Seeing that change in mid-session could indicate that your computer has an unstable connection and is switching among multiple connection paths, for example, different wired or wireless networks, a private VPNs, or peer-to-peer network like Hola or Tor. Or malware may be involved.

Could you check the certificates for some sites where you added an exception to see whether there is a pattern to the "Issued by" information which points to a specific culprit. Here's how:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Advanced. Then on the right side, click the Certificates mini-tab along the top. Then click the "View Certificates" button.

This should open the Certificate Manager. Click the "Servers" tab. Ignore the ones for "*" and check for any servers you remember adding an exception for. Highlight a server and click View to check the "Issued by" information.

Any pattern?

You also could check whether you have Firefox set to use a proxy server and switch that off temporarily. You can do that on the Options page:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Advanced. On the right side, click the "Network" mini-tab and then the "Settings" button.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" piggybacks on your Windows LAN connection settings, but you could try "No proxy" to see whether that helps.

An extension also might be involved. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?
