At what point did the Mozilla community decide to treat it's customers like Micoshaft noobs?

I no longer can play previews on http://www.imdb.com/ My concern is that I have no idea what happened when I clicked the "Refresh Firefox" button. I prefer my updates to inform me what is going on. I expect the silent treatment from Microsoft, which has ZERO regard for it's user base, NOT from Mozilla. I do NOT wish my ignorance to be coddled into blind acceptance.

Please revert / or upgrade / to a MUCH MORE INFORMATIVE update/refresh process.

Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0

Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Version 20.0.0.286

Note: Windows users should download the ‘’’active_x’’’ for “Internet Explorer,” and the ‘’’plugin’’’ for “Plugin-based browsers” (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the ’’’plugin’’’ only. Not the ’’’active_x’’’.

Ok thanks for the after-the-fact info. Might this page be displayed before the refresh implements??

The url up there for flash, is giving a warning that that page will no longer be available after a certain time, it also gives this url instead for people to use. Is it possible for somebody to change this?

Why ask here? You know where the Contributor forum is.

Hi Conner, so we can track down the place that has an insufficient explanation, could you indicate which of the following was the way that you ran Refresh:

  • Used a button or link in a Mozilla Support web page?
  • Used the button on the Troubleshooting Information page?
  • Responded to a prompt at the bottom of the browser window indicating that you could speed up Firefox by restoring some default settings?
  • Responded to a prompt at the bottom of the browser window saying you hadn't used Firefox in a long time and maybe you'd like to refresh it?
  • Used the button in the Safe Mode/Refresh dialog at startup?
  • Other?

Do you think the support article provides the information you would want, or what exactly would you want in addition to the standard two line warning?

I do - perhaps summarized in a response popup window with a continue Button to acknowledge the info?

It is regrettable that Version 44.whatever has been pushed so hard. The ONLY thing that version has done is cause me trouble.

Reverting to 43 AND disabling automatic updates was the only way I could restore functions I'd enjoyed pre-44.

btw. Having this forum solicit Survey opinions PRIOR to resolution seems a tad silly. Just sayin' ...

The issue is still Unresolved for the recent version. I wish you guys well figuring it out. I darn near installed Chrome! *shudder*

I'm on Win7.

When you originally posted, your Firefox reported that you are running Windows XP. Was it the same computer? This can occur when Firefox is set to run in backwards compatibility mode. That should never be necessary for a mature OS like Windows 7, and probably isn't even helpful on Windows 10 at this point. Since Windows XP does not have the complete functionality of later versions of Windows, I suggest checking on this so Firefox isn't inadvertently crippled.

(1) Firefox shortcut compatibility settings

Firefox is fully compatible with Windows 7, so it's generally not a good idea to use any of those settings.

To double-check, you can access the Properties dialog for the shortcut. Either:

  • right-click a desktop shortcut
  • right-click a pinned taskbar icon, then right-click Mozilla Firefox

In the Properties dialog, click the Compatibility tab and make sure nothing is set/selected on this tab. (Screen shot attached.)

(2) Disable the Protected Mode feature of the Flash plugin

If you notice any new issues with Flash:

The protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the little More link next to its description. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.
