Can't enable Direct2D on Intel GMA 3150: "Blocked for your graphics driver version" despite having supported version

Full-screen HTML5 video players are very choppy on this netbook (Asus EeePc 1015PX). I noticed in about:support that Direct2D is being disabled, so I'm trying to enable it and test performance.

As shown in the attached troubleshooting information, about:support states only "Direct2D Enabled Blocked for your graphics driver version."

According to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting/Blocked_Graphics_Drivers the required driver on Win 7 is 8.14.10.2117, which I have. The only other graphics driver available is V8.14.10.2364, which behaves the same. I've tried spoofing other versions too (8.15...) with no effect.

I've tried forcing it on with gfx.direct2d.force-enabled=true but it seems to have no effect either.

hi joeyjojo, unfortunately this hardware/driver combination had to be put on the blocklist for certain graphics features, since it was causing widespread startup-crashes after the firefox 41 release (bug1207665).

Hi philipp, thanks for your reply.

It would be helpful if this information were available on the blocklist wiki page. I see that list is "presented for historical reasons, and is not currently up to date" but in that state it causes more confusion than it solves!

So, is this blocklist not overridable? I was under the impression gfx.direct2d.force-enabled could force it on so I could test it with my machine.

If not, what are my other options? As I see them they're:

  • Revert to Firefox 40 and never update again
  • Switch to another browser
  • Replace the netbook

gfx.direct2d.force-enabled=true should work in this case, however that will take a restart of the browser to take effect...

It doesn't seem to. I get the same results in the stress test linked in the article below (a miserable 7-8 FPS) with force-enabled as with hardware acceleration off (in about:preferences#advanced).

For the record I switched to Opera on the netbook now and it's smooth as butter, in both HTML5 video players and the stress test I mentioned earlier.

Anyone struggling with hardware acceleration on older devices would do well to give Opera a try, it worked perfectly for me "out of the box".
