The crash report signature has "shutdownhang" which implies that Firefox was trying to close and that process stalled.

But from your perspective, you were trying to start Firefox, not shut it down?

There is an update out for Firefox 36, but to install it I suggest the following method:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your data/settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean. As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 36.0.4 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox.

(3) Rename the program folder

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

No, it doesn't solve my problem. (1)I follow your instruction, reinstall and reboot my computer as well. (2)Open very slowly until I just closed off the browser. (3)I noticed something, which not sure it helps. If I do wait, and manage to surf a website, says yahoo.com, after 3 min or so, the browser seemed to be try to get "some data", etc and the browser hangs. Wait another 5 min, everything is ok again, then hangs. (4) That's what I noticed when I log in to Facebook to play candy crush as well. (5) I tried a anti virus scan, avast & Malwarebytes anti Malware scan and they turn up nothing. (6)Also, I tried to disable Accelerator, which someone on the internet mentioned, but still doesn't work. (7) This issue only happen when I was automatic upgraded to a newer version of firefox36 (8) Finally, I attached the crash report. https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/6557923e-5d3b-47c7-aed5-d25f52150322

By the way, Safe Mode disables extensions (like Adblock Plus) but not plugins (like Shockwave Flash). I don't know whether those are a factor, but you could review them.

In particular, if you have security-related or other "global" plugins that work in the background, they may cause problems if set to "Ask to Activate". You can adjust the permissions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins.

I suggest setting:

  • media viewers such as Adobe Acrobat, Silverlight, Shockwave Flash: "Ask to Activate"
  • global plugins such as password managers or security scanners: "Always Activate"
  • mystery plugins: "Never Activate"

This change might not affect the current window, but should affect new windows (Ctrl+n) and all windows after exiting and starting Firefox up again.

Firefox 36 added a feature to listen on your local network for devices it might use to screencast content, such as a Roku. I don't know whether problems with this feature could lock up Firefox. Do you recall when Firefox 36 installed allowing Windows Firewall (or your other security software) to add some new rules for Firefox? If so, you might try deleting the rules and see whether that makes any difference.

If it's the Windows Firewall, you can go to

Start menu > Control Panel > "System & Security" category > Windows Firewall

In the left column click Advanced Settings to launch a new window and in the left column click Inbound Rules. Here you can right-click > Delete the rules for Firefox.

As you browse, the Windows Firewall may present a new dialog for approving the missing rules. You can click cancel to block the connections.

Any difference?

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Jsch2000, Sorry, (1) tried your method on firewall securities. Doesn't work. (2)Also, updated all my plugin and launch firefox, also of no help. (3) Disable all plugin for unknow device, and choose Ask to activate for Adobe Acrobat, Silverlight, Shockwave Flash. No help. There is no global plugin like password securities or scanner on "add on". (4) But Avast online securities found at "extensions" was enable. But disable, also no different. Now will go try Fred MCD suggestions. Now got phobia waiting for firefox launch.

To see whether this could be caused by something in your current settings, could you try this experiment? It takes about 3 minutes:

Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should come with completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run) -- type or paste the following and press Enter:

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here.

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like March16, and ignore the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.

Any improvement?

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

FredMcD,

(1)If I am not wrong, atidxx32.dll seemed to be the driver for ATI Radeon graphics card? I pressed update of the driver card in control panel-> device manager-> display adaptor, and there is no new updates.
 (2) I have submitted the recent crash report.

Thank you for the new crash IDs:

The newest is a hang in the Flash player plugin. For this I can only suggest "the usual" which I will put in the second half of this post.

The second newest seems to be a crash in the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin, which hardly any sites require. The same kind of crash is reported to occur if you open PDFs in the Adobe Acrobat plugin in two different tabs and close one of the tabs, according to a bug report linked to your crash data.

If you can get Firefox to start, I would try completely disabling the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin on the Add-ons page. However, if you can't start Firefox, it's a little complicated to do this. Let me see if I can work that out and post it later.

For Flash, if you haven't already, try disabling the protected mode feature. That feature of the Flash player plugin has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches for that:

Flash needs to completely unload from memory (exiting and starting Firefox up again might help) before this takes effect.

Any improvement?

If you can run Firefox, then these are some other common troubleshooting steps:

(1) If you have any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

That takes effect the next time you exit and start Firefox up again.

(B) In Flash, right-click the media and choose Settings, then the first mini-tab and uncheck the box to use hardware acceleration. More information in this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

Jscher2000,

sorry, haven't tried out what U spelt out as my IE now will not play flash. Need to resolve it, so that I have at least 1 browser working. In my memory, if I am not wrong, I have disable flash b4 but didnt work. (Have not tried your step by step method though). N I have disable the accelerator as well. Still didn't work. But as I am loading a blank page in Firefox, and it take a long time to load, so I don't think flash is the issue. But I did try to do what U suggested, firefox.exe -P. The page went blank. A message "Display drive AMD stop responding and has since recovered". This tie in with FredMcD analysis. I did read about some other graphic driver giving some issues on other firefox users. But I have my ATI radeon graphics updated. So, not sure what happen. But may be looking at this direction.

Try to uninstall and reinstall Flash You can uninstall the current Flash player version and (re)install the latest Flash version.

See this about uninstalling Flash players:

Note that this will remove all installed Flash players.

You can find the latest Flash player versions on this page:

Jscher2000, no, it doesn't help. May just wait for the next higher version of frefox to come out. The page that I have set to load is a blank page. Yet, when I typed on address bar, it already said "not responding" at the top left bar next to the word firefox and shows a light blank colour page. Then U have to wait a long time before it clear and let u typed something.

Cor-el, not sure you means uninstall flash in control panel? Did that. But no diff. As I mentioned, I am just loading a blank page, already take a long time to load. ( show firefox not responding).
