I keep changing the option about what to show on next startup to "Show my windows and tabs from last time". Every time I restart Firefox, it gets changed back to "Show my home page". I've uninstalled Firefox, deleted the Mozilla folders under AppData, reinstalled, and it still keeps losing my selection.

I am running Windows 10, and have recently started experiencing trouble with Firefox. After trying a lot of other solutions from the support forums (including creating a new Firefox profile), I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox from a fresh download. I experience the same trouble: very shortly after starting Firefox, I hear constant disk activity, and Firefox becomes unresponsive. My only choice at that point is to end the program using the red "X" (program close button). As soon as I do this the disk activity ends and the computer runs normally.

I cannot include troubleshooting information with this post because I can't keep Firefox running long enough.

The same performance issues happen with Firefox running in Safe mode. I had to resort to Microsoft Edge to post this question.

Any troubleshooting assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I originally had an issue of Google Maps crashing my Firefox 40.0.3 every time I load the page. I tried following the troubleshooting here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

and it works in Safe Mode, but: 1. I'm on default theme already 2. I turned off hardware accelerator 3. I disabled all my extensions

and it STILL crashes. So based on this article, I can't figure out what else I can disable that would cause the crash.

Not sure if this information helps, but when I tried to load the mozilla support page titled "Ask your question to our community of users", it crashes firefox every time unless I'm in Safe Mode (which I am right now to post this).

Hi,

Using Notepad, I opened an .xpi file in my C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\********.default\extensions folder. By mistake I left the X in the option box "Always use this app to open .xpi files", so all the .xpi files in my ********.default\extensions folder have an incorrect file association, and I don't know what the correct association is. I tried setting the default opening application to Firefox, but that's incorrect. All the .xpi files in the folder now have the Firefox logo next to them, and .xpi files in other locations also have it next to them. My Firefox extensions seem to be working OK, but I'd like to restore the correct default opening application for the .xpi files in the ********.default\extensions folder.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of the Extensions, but that of course didn't fix the problem. I don't want to do a system restore because the OS and antivirus updated afterward, and system restore is very time consuming on this machine.

This might be a problem for a Windows forum(?), but maybe someone here at Mozilla Support might know the solution. I'm OK with regedit.exe, command prompt, editing files, etc. if needed if needed. Any help will be very much appreciated. I have Windows 10 64-bit OS

I don't want to lose my cookies for weather.com, because I want to be able to get my local forecast every time I sign in without the extra steps. Firefox didn't have this problem on my old XP computer, which also ran version 40.0.3. On this computer, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, and every time I go to weather.com, either by bookmark or by manually typing it in the address bar, the entire browser crashes to the desktop. It is repeatable, and I've repeated it about 10 times now. So, when is version 41.0.0 coming out to fix this strange crash issue?

Fan runs high & hot watching youtube videos. Have new macbook pro retina 15" mid 2015. 2.5 GHz intel core i7. Started happening after second to last Firefox update. Updated to most current thinking it would be fixed. It doesn't happen if I use Safari. Apple support senior lead tried to resolve issues. Sorry, I'm not very technical. Tried shift, control, option start. Tried option, command,R,P start. Tried logging on as a new user. Tried so many options, I can't remember them all. Uninstalled, reinstalled, and uninstalled again. ran disk repair(?). Followed Firefox troubleshoot all the way to the end. Started in Safe Mode...everything. She told me to contact Mozilla to see if you had any answers to my issues. I also had issues last week with Firefox crashing 3-4 times in a row while watching youtube. I sent reports to Firefox. I hope someone can help me. I prefer Firefox to Safari! Thank you!

Is this statement below true? If so I will be forced to use another browser. These are safe and well functioning extensions I have installed from trusted web developers. I have trusted Firefox since, well "forever", and now limiting or even causing my extensions to stop functioning is bad. So upset about this and after all these years of having a functioning browser with the ease of making it more my own and having limited use such as with Chrome, Safari or IE is far the worst decision I have ever seen in the history of Mozilla. Hoping some feedback from others may help the developers make a better decision, and hoping Firefox can remain in the top for user-friendly experience. There are enough FREE web extensions out there to protect us all from malicious web sites and virus protection programs we all can use to keep us safe on our computers and web, why would a decision be made to limited extension security be implemented when all is working fine. Even my McAfee SiteAdvisor and Avast Online Security are showing they cannot be verified now with version 40. Ridiculous and bad for consumers who have always liked and trusted Firefox for a more user-friendly experience.

August 21, 2015

Mozilla just announced their intent to deprecate so called XUL-based add-ons in favor of what they call the WebExtensions API within the next year or two. The WebExtensions API is supposed to be mostly compatible to Chrome/Safari extension APIs.

What does this mean for XUL-based add-ons? Well, for starters, Extensions will be dead if XUL-based add-ons with XPCOM access are gone. Simple as that. The new APIs would only allow for a severely limited in functionality, severely stripped down Extensions at best.

Gone will be add-ons that e.g. let you change major bits about the Firefox user interface (e.g. tabs tree add-ons), add-ons that allow you to do more “advanced” stuff than just showing or slightly altering websites, such as e.g. restarting the browser upon click (unless mozilla kindly provides an API for that, which won’t be compatible with Chrome, of course). Add-ons like NoScript will be severely limited in their feature set as well. Say byebye to Greasemonkey and hello to Tampermonkey, with it’s limitations. Want that add-on that lets you change the new tab page for something else or enhances that page? Maybe it will be available, maybe not, depending on if and when mozilla kindly provides WebExtensions APIs for such things. And of course, depending on if there will be an author creating this entirely new add-on from scratch.

What this also means: Almost all your existing add-ons will be broken, entirely, save for some Add-on SDK add-ons, namely those that don’t do anything fancy. Sure, even today, lots of add-ons break, and some add-ons will not get updated when they do and there are no suitable replacements. However, with this change, almost every add-on will be completely broken and in need of major updating by the extension authors. Good luck with that.

It is safe to say, that Firefox will not be Firefox anymore as far as extensions go, but instead will become yet another Chrome-clone.

To be clear: I was furious when the extension signing stuff was announced and then actually implemented, which effectively created yet another Walled Garden, but regarding this announcement I am just sad. Right now, it feels like I just learned my dear old friend Firefox is going to die.

Within 'All Bookmarks' (as revealed by Ctrl-Shift-B) I have the 'Bookmarks Toolbar' - on the toolbar I have a folder called 'Bookmarks' which I have been using to maintain bookmarks through many versions of Firefox. At some point a fault has occured when I do the following steps: 1. Add bookmark (Ctrl-D) 2. Choose Folder 'Bookmarks Toolbar' 3. Click on down-arrow icon ('Show all the bookmarks folders')

      • At this point the Bookmarks tab on the bookmarks folder disappears!

The only solution I can find so far is to resort to a backup (via Ctrl-Shift-D), Import and Backup. At that point if I follow the same steps again the problem does not recur.

The problem recurs after I restart Firefox.

Any direction much appreciated.

Hello,

I did a clean install (not migrate) of Windows 10 Pro (retail) and also a clean install of Firefox 40.0.3. I would like to use Firefox as my default mail program (as I did on Windows 7 Ultimate with Firefox 28).

When prompted by Windows OR manually setting the default mail program, Windows only allows me to select from a list. This list contains:

1) Google Chrome
2) Mail
3) Microsoft Outlook
4) Select an application from the store. (When you use this option three entries appear none of which are Firefox).

When I go to the section where you can set defaults by protocols again Firefox is not shown as a valid option for the mailto protocol.

IN FACT, when I look at the Windows 10 understanding of what Firefox supports in both File Extents and Protocols, the mailto protocol is missing. It looks like Firefox never, ever told Windows 10 it supports mailto .... in fact LOTS of protocols Firefox supports are missing from the list of protocols Windows 10 knows Firefox support.

The Microsoft employee asked: Isn't it Mozilla / Firefox responsibility to register with Windows the protocols and extensions it supports. After all Microsoft isn't a mind reader, right!? ********************************************************************* So one possible fix or workaround suggested from my 5 hour phone call with the Microsoft Answer Desk: How does someone get Firefox to register mailto (and all other protocols) with Windows 10? *********************************************************************

Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this posting and considering a reply.
