As of around 1 week ago, I can no longer access facebook, any mozilla/google related page however I can still access the google search engine by entering the 197.1.1 code thing (not very pc literate).

My problem is whenever I type google.com or facebook.com into the url, nothing actually happens, the url looks like it seeking than it just revert back to whatever url I was on before. I can access youtube but the comments section is just loading but thing actually shows up. If I try to open firefox help page a new window would open but it is just blank even though I can see the see the address in the url. I can however open trouble shooting page and about firefox but none of the others page in the help option.

I have tried reverting firefox to default and restart firefox with no addon without any changes. I have tried ipconfig /flushdns and also resetting my host file from mrfixit as well as scanning for malware from malbytes, adaware and spybot and none of them made a difference at all.

I am currently using firefox 26, OS Windows 7 64bit.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode. See if you still have the problem.

===============================

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Ok thanks for trying to help but if you actually read my post I have already tried firefox safe mode and virus scanner and none of them help.

So any other advice would be appreciated.

You said that Firefox is unable to open Facebook or any mozilla/google related page. You also said you can still access the google search engine by entering the 197.1.1 code thing. Did you mean an IP address for Google such as http://74.125.224.72/ or http://74.125.131.105/ works but http://www.google.com doesn't?

You also said that you can access youtube but the comments section is just loading. Are there any other problem webpages that won't load in Firefox ... for example, can you access www.cnn.com ... en.wikipedia.org ... support.microsoft.com ... forums.mozillazine.org ... etc. ?

Does Internet Explorer work for the same problem websites?

the ip address for google works fine but not google.com itself. Also the website you listed all work fine. Its only firefox that cant access google and facebook - IE works fine.

You said the trouble was with Google.com or Facebook.com. What about other sites? Any kind of problem? Slow, hesitate other things?

When you try Google.com or Facebook.com, what exactly happens? Does Firefox send out the request to the web? Does the indicator show any response, and kind of data transfer? Do you have any kind of time-out?

the url looks like it's trying to connect but than just revert back to the current site url in half a second - I can ping google fine in cmd as well.

Since the problem ONLY happens in Firefox and ONLY on certain websites (mozilla, google, facebook) .... but other websites load fine in Firefox, the related article is

You already cleared cookies and cache and you said you already tried scanning for malware with MalwareBytes and "reverting firefox to default" which I took to mean you reset Firefox.

Other suggestions (some of which I see you've tried) are listed in MozillaZine's Error loading websites article.

What's interesting is that Google's IP address works fine but not google.com which indicates a DNS issue that only affects certain sites and only in Firefox. You also said I can access youtube but the comments section is just loading but thing actually shows up. Wasn't there something about malware links in YouTube comments recently?

I see from your Troubleshooting Information that you use a number of extensions related to adblocking, link checking, websearching, download acceleration .... so I would suspect that, even though the Firefox extensions are disabled, you have other security software that is filtering Firefox content. As a test you could try restarting Windows in Safe Mode with Networking to see if software that starts when Windows is started normally is interfering with Firefox (this could also point to malware that you haven't found).

The Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article links here for Windows Safe Mode: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Ok so safemode works fine. I can access google and facebook no problem however search from malewarebyte still cant detect anything in safemode.

I would install all of the malware removal tools listed in Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware and then run them to see what they find.

If nothing comes up then you'll have to figure out the program that is running in Windows normal mode, that isn't running in Windows Safe Mode, that is interfering with Firefox. This These Microsoft article articles will show you how:

OR, you can post a list of programs installed on your computer that run when Windows starts, to see if anyone here can spot the problem.

If you need help troubleshooting Windows startup programs, I think that a Windows forum like sevenforums.com ... answers.microsoft.com ... or windowsbbs.com would be the best place to get help.

If you can access the web sites in safe mode, it may be an add-on, but try this first. Firefox Options > Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
If still a problem, then Firefox > Add-ons > Extensions. Go thru and disable EVERYTHING. Try again. If still a problem then Firefox > Add-ons > Plugins. Disable EVERYTHING.

Let us know how you are doing.

You can do a malware check with a few more malware scanning programs.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Hi brianroo, thank you for reporting this issue. So far, you have cleared the cache, ran a virus scan, and have tried to reproduce this issue in safe mode and have seen it go away in safe mode.

May I confirm with you that you have also turned off and on each add on and tried to load the same page? This will narrow down the culprit. You did mention in the original post that you "restart firefox with no addon ", and the issue continued.

Can you also make sure the troubleshooting list of add ons are the same as the ones that appear in your add on manager? Please take a screenshot of your add ons page as well How to make screenshots as some have been mentioned to be spyware.

Looking forward to your reply.

An answer was just posted today by cor-el that seems to have helped another Firefox user with a similar issue, where google sites and facebook would load in the Safari browser but not in Firefox:

/questions/986513#answer-534319 Firefox doesn't load google sites nor facebook

cor-el:
Try to disable IPv6 (check other suggestions as well):

Question owner:
So far the IPv6 change seems to have worked,

This is copied from the MozillaZine article:

By default, Firefox/Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey will use IPv6 ("Internet Protocol version 6") if it is available. However, the user's local network or Internet environment may not be equipped to handle IPv6 <snip>
To disable IPv6, change the preference network.dns.disableIPv6 from "false" to true . Here are the steps:
1. Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
2. Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
3. Right-click -> Toggle.
4. Restart your Mozilla application and try again.
If this doesn't work, you can re-enable IPv6 by resetting the preference to "false" (double-click to toggle).

Sorry for late reply but have been busy with work - anyway I have ran all malware scanner, tried disabling and enabling hardware acceleration and also tried the network.dns.disableIPv6 before with no change. I also tried to disable all services in msconfig beside microsoft services in startup and still no change either.

I should mention interesting - failblog.org in firefox have no images/ads, the page just display a white background and texts/links as well as videos while failblog.org in IE shows it as normal with all ads/images/texts/links/videos.

I tried to update my adobe/java and java tells me I am up to date while when I tried to download adobe flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/), the yellow install button on the page does not display. So I tried to download adobe for firefox from IE and when I tried to install it I get error message HOST "Unable to load application configuration".

This is getting really fustrating and hopefully you guys can help.

Just to cover all bases I would try disabling DNS Prefetching and anythign else listed in the Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can article.

You also said, I also tried to disable all services in msconfig beside microsoft services in startup and still no change either. Did you also try disabling all Startup programs? (If it didn't help after restarting Windows, you should return Windows to a normal startup)

more options

So nothing has changed after all this time - tried dns prefechting already. Strange thing is I have trouble connecting to League of Legends (its keeps saying attempting to reconnec to servers) whereas Heroes of Newerth and Dota 2 works fine.

I also cant seem to install java or adobe as both have errors. I cant work out what the common denominator here is.

I can't comment on that without more information but you may be having issues that are unrelated to Firefox. My guess would be a background program (possibly web-filtering/security/antivirus software) that runs when you start Windows normally but not in Windows Safe Mode with Networking, that is interfering with opening certain websites and possibly with installation of other software.

A list of your Windows startup programs might be helpful. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee851671.aspx

(From my last post) "You also said, I also tried to disable all services in msconfig beside microsoft services in startup and still no change either. Did you also try disabling all Startup programs? (If it didn't help after restarting Windows, you should return Windows to a normal startup)"

Like I said before: "If you need help troubleshooting Windows startup programs, I think that a Windows forum like sevenforums.com ... answers.microsoft.com ... or windowsbbs.com would be the best place to get help".

I overlooked your earlier comment,

I tried to update my adobe/java and java tells me I am up to date while when I tried to download adobe flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/), the yellow install button on the page does not display. So I tried to download adobe for firefox from IE and when I tried to install it I get error message HOST "Unable to load application configuration".

I found this on Adobe's forum:

Hi.....I had the exact same problem as you mate. I have win XP 64 with Firefox. And I found that I had to disable AVG for a short time......and now everything is working fine again with the lastest update of Flash Player

So, in this case it was the AVG security sdoftware that was causing the error.

You can download the plugin installer (for Firefox) and and the activex installer (for IE) from the links at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#main-pars_header ...and then disable your Internet security software before running them.

Same with Java - get the full, offline 32-bit installer from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and run it with your security software disabled.

If you need more help installing or updating Java or Adobe Flash you should ask a new question ... or see:
