I am having the most trouble when on facebook, but it happens all the time. I cannot even scroll down and sometimes cannot finish typing a sentence without getting the "firefox is not responding" message, and everything stalls. it is happening like every 30 seconds at times. it started a few updates back and has never stopped.

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.

Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!

I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/

or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"

After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!

After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)

For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.

Enjoy. Hope this helped

I am on Windows 7 Professional on a low-end Acer laptop.

I have been using Firefox since the Win 98 days. Just in the last 2 weeks or so, I've had exactly the same problem. Every time I scroll or change tabs( it's the exception to the rule that I have more than about 4 tabs open at a given moment)

The problem starts off OK when I first boot up, and gets slowly worse, just as though there were a memory leak somewhere. It is absolutely NOT specific to any particular web site. I can close Firefox, wait about two minutes, re-open it, and the problem goes away for a few minutes and comes right back. If I try to re-open Firefox immediately, I get a Windows error message that says that Firefox is "open but not responding" This happens even if I just use Firefox to open a local .jpg file that has been transferred over from an older system. It takes between 2 and 3 minutes before I can open Firefox successfully.

As I write this, I'm having trouble with Firefox stalling on the text I'm typing. The longer I type the worse it gets.

My security is all built around what Comcast offers for free with their service. Several months ago, they shifted from Macafee to Norton as their included anti-virus product. I set my cookies pretty tight on purpose. I have Firefox configured as the default browser. I HAVE run into the problem with Comcast that involves Windows having to revert to a previous version. That trashes the whole security suite they provide, and Norton won't uninstall-reinstall. You need to call Norton, let them into your system, and then re-install. Not something I'm interested in doing twice!!!

It gets to a point where I try to close Firefox and I get the Windows idiot box about "Firefox is not responding" and "Do you want to : Close. Wait for response. The default seems to be "Wait"

Right now, as I click over to other tabs, I get a not responding message, and have to do it twice.

This only started in recent days About two weeks ago.

I did solve the issue of Flash player crashing by backing off one version. I would not say the problem changes at all when I open a .pdf file and it calls Acrobat Reader

I already uninstalled and re-installed Firefox Arguably the laptop could use a registry cleanup. I have yet to find a practical, reasonably priced registry cleanup program for Windows 7. So If I have to do a regedit. I better KNOW EXACTLY what file to edit.

I'm not totally green. About a decade ago, I did technical support for an ISP, but I'm now obsolete. I consider my technical level "medium"

Can anyone help with this problem? If it keeps up, I'll have to find a new browser.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

You can try to reset Firefox and create a new profile.
