How do I set my bookmarks in toolbar to open in new tab?

While using an opened tab which I want to keep in place, I find it frustrating that if I want to click on one of my bookmarks in my toolbar, it uses the tab I am currently in which, of course disappears and is overridden with my selection of a bookmark. Is there a setting for me to change how my choosing of a bookmark reacts? I want it to open in a new tab and not on the one I am working with. I have looked everywhere and I cannot find a setting for this.

Hey CJ, I totally get the frustration — I’ve had the same issue. In most browsers, including Firefox, you can hold down Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while clicking a bookmark to open it in a new tab. Another approach is to right-click the bookmark and choose “Open in New Tab”, which works reliably.

If you’re managing a lot of bookmarks or workflow shortcuts, I’ve found that using platforms like Phonexa to organize links, tasks, and tracking can help keep everything structured, so you’re not constantly hunting through tabs or bookmarks. It’s a bit indirect, but it really helps when juggling multiple resources at once.

Fantastic! Thank you. Why on earth I did not think of the "right click" myself, leaves me shaking my head. This should have been a no-brainer, duh. But, your suggestion of the Ctrl I like even better. It could not have been possible for me to know this. Where do you acquire this type of information? How do you know that holding Ctrl while tapping on the bookmark affects how it responds? Inquiring minds need to know!

Firefox shortcuts are listed in these two articles:

To open a bookmark in a new tab without holding a key, you can also enter about:config in the address bar and switch

  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs = false
  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground = false

Thank you. I just don't have the time to read everything there is to know about my laptops. Shortcuts certainly are handy if you can memorize the list. Not being a heavy user challenges this feat. I like the idea of going into about:config; if I do this, then the bookmark I click on which I keep in my toolbar will immediately open in a new tab? If yes, I will make this change.

I just tried the about:config and it turns out that I already have a FALSE reading. Yet, my bookmarks do not open in a new tab, it opens up in the tab that I am in (sometimes I want to save where I am and what I am looking at) Please advise.

Did I say false? It's default setting, you should switch to true.

Excellent. Such a simple solution to an annoying problem. I switched it to true and my bookmark worked like I needed it to...opened up a new tab. Fantastic. Thanks again.
