Hey,

on one of my notebooks (Thinkpad E495) FF occasionally crashes. This started happening a few months ago. Before I've been using FF on the same machine for years without any issues. It's pretty random but usually happens at least once a day, usually shortly after startup or wakeup from hibernate mode. A while ago it used to even crash back to back twice in a row meaning after I reopened it, it immediately closed again and only worked after I selected to restore the previous session after the 2nd reopen. Nothing is registered under about:crashes and I don't see any errors in the system event log.

I already tried to disable hardware acceleration and reinstalled FF completely without any addons besides a different adblocker. I cannot really reproduce the crash in safe-mode but don't really want to browse the web for possibly hours without an adblocker.

Any ideas what this could be or what else I could try? Maybe downgrade to a previous version?

Is it the program that is crashing, or the computer?

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 Submitted crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

Please, Do not post a screenshot ! !

No, it's only firefox closing. I'm not sure if it even crashes because there are no reports under about:crashes ('No crash reports have been sent'). However the next time that I open it after such an event, it reopens my previous session which doesn't happen if I close it properly by myself.

If the browser closes unexpectedly, it can reopen the last session.

When the browser closes/crashes/whatever, What were you doing at the time? surfing, watching a clip, reading something . . . . Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few?

About how long are you on the bowser when the problem happens?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I just ran it in safe-mode a couple of times over the last few days and think I just reproduced the unexpected close in safe-mode. I'll retry to confirm. It again happened within the first minute after waking up my laptop from hibernation.

Yes, definitely also crashes in safe-mode. This time twice in a row again.

Have you checked for crash reports?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Version 86.0, first offered to Release channel users on February 23, 2021

1) Yes, I'm on 86.0 2) There still aren't any crash reports even though FF still closes/crashes unintendedly at least once per day 3) I cannot really test secure mode properly because I'd have to use FF for hours, possible over multiple days to be sure the problem doesn't occur while essential parts of the system are unuseable. I also cannot setup a wired ethernet connection easily. That's just too inconvenient. If there is no other way to figure out what's happening, I guess I'll have to live with it or move to another browser.

Thanks for any help anyway.

We have been seeing this a lot of late: Did you see any error messages when launching Firefox, such as "VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL is not found"? In that case, I would install both 32-bit and 64-bit "Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019" downloads, (x86: vc_redist.x86.exe and x64: vc_redist.x64.exe) from https://support.microsoft.com/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

No, no issue like this. I already have the Visual Studio 2013 and 2015-2019 redistributable installed.

Can I somehow extract an event log from when session restore fails? Because I have it happening more often again that it unexpectedly closes at some point and then immediately closes a second time back to back once I try to restore the previous session after the first close.

I called for more help.
