I'm not sure I understand your question, but let me try.

The Library window you open with Ctrl+Shift+b basically has the same layout. Main difference I'm aware of: Firefox no longer has a Description field for bookmarks.

I want to be able to open ANY two or more folders at one time (and keep them open)

I think Firefox 75 works like Firefox 52 in this regard: you can expand multiple folders in the hierarchy.

And I don't want to view bookmarks in a right hand side half of window.

What? You use the left side panel to expand different parts of your bookmark hierarchy, and the selected folder contents are displayed on the right. Where else would they display? Maybe you can post a screenshot of what you mean.

Hi Jscher2000 .... First of all ... on the infrequent occasions when I needed help .... you've always turned up and I appreciate that.

Where else would they display? I'm using FF52 with the Bookmark window. Not Library. (sorry for any confusion.) Its NOT a dual sided window. The window image I'm adding was expanded for privacy .. normally its just 2 inches wide near the left screen edge. Folder and bookmarks ... nothing else. No right hand side. Clean.

There is only one panel at the right side that can display the content of the folder that is selected in the left panel, so what you ask is not possible in the Library. You can consider to use the Bookmarks sidebar, where you can see all the bookmarks is each folder. If the folders are too far apart then consider the Bookmarks sidebar in two windows.

So I think that answers my question. In Library, the right side panel displays the contents of one folder at a time ONLY. Horrible. And in Bookmarks, its available only as a sidebar (not its own window) which cuts into the Browser real estate. I treat the browser and my bookmarks as two separate apps/clients, essentially, as I have it now.

So Neither option works even for one of my two needs, never mind both at once as I have things now.

It seems from your screenshot that some extension you're using has popped the Bookmarks Sidebar out into its own window. If you paste the following address to the address bar of a new window and press Enter to load it, you have largely the same functionality:

chrome://browser/content/places/bookmarksSidebar.xhtml

It is a regular window with toolbars, so you'll have a little less height to work with.

The old address was

chrome://browser/content/places/bookmarksSidebar.xul

(.xul changed to .xhtml in a recent version)

And yes, on FF 52, I'm currently using All in One Sidebar, as I think I noted at the outset.

That is the extension that's no longer supported in Quantum that so many people regarded as one of the most useful ever created. I was running FF 3.26 before AIOS came along.

Note that opening the bookmarks sidebar in a tab may not work properly for all actions (possibly creating a new folder).

Its a pity that developers chose to abandon those of us that placed a premium on a simple elegant way to get key things done. It seems that more bells and whistles always seem to be the driver of change. And if that's not what happened, how is it that a simple bookmark manager (with options for those who want them) hasn't been created for Quantum? PS ... I use tabs but not to catalog my bookmarks aside from when I open one of them. I likely have 2500 or more.

Anyhow ... thanks for that warning .... I gather you've been toying with the idea that J floated earlier today.

Hi pieter_biz, this was never a built-in feature of Firefox, and no one is saying that there isn't now or couldn't be an extension that would do what you want. In fact, there may well be one, although I'm not aware of it.

The following is a well-established bookmark extension that works in the sidebar. Is there any reason it couldn't run in its own window instead of the sidebar? Not that I can think of, but I haven't asked the author to look into it.

Actually, it was. I had precisely this functionality in FF before FF 4.0 .... I was on 3.26 for many years, well into the FF 20s, before I discovered Ingo's creation (AIOS) and how to set up as I had been able to before.

Trust me, this WAS something that FF could do at the beginning. Because its why I chose FF way back then.

But .. I'll make note of your suggestion also and ... as I said ... I'll toy around with these two options. But ... opening one folder ONLY at a time ..... no way jose. I jump between dozens of different bookmarks each day and want them VISIBLE and one click away not two.

Hi again J and Corel ... my prior references to FF 3.26 were likely intended to mean 3.6.26. That was a while ago. All I remember now is that FF 4 involved considerable changes, and did not work for me on its own.

My recollection is that the path forward (at that time) was to not support hierarchical bookmarks, and inquires to Mozilla support I placed around the time indicated as such.

Not meaning to step on toes here ... I'm not a power user by any stretch ... but I've always accessed bookmarks in this way using FF. Its a very basic and essential feature for me. Since the very beginning.

I don't see that kind of window in either Firefox 3.5.19 or 3.6.22 (the latest of the 3.5.x and 3.6.x series available in "Portable" form). I've attached screenshots of what I found.

But anyway, the important thing is what current releases of Firefox can and cannot do.

Its been too long, but it may have been through the Organize Bookmarks drop down function, back then. (And while I recall "26" as part of the version #, it may have been 3.6.28 but I'd have to see if I still have that ancient XP machine lying around?  :-) Don't think so. Those screenshots don't look ANYTHING like what I remember pre FF 4 looking like ...

But yes ... moving forward with what's at hand is the issue. Thanks for giving this as much attention as you have.
