Firefox crashes *randomly* to the point that I might switch browsers if I don't get it to stop.

About 4 days ago my Firefox started randomly crashing. This happens for example when I open up a new tab and type something in my normal typing speed. Or sometimes when I switch programs and in the mean time all the windows have crashed. Usually the whole Firefox just freezes, becomes unresponsive, and I have to manually end the task, but a few times it has crashed faster than I can blink. No other program in my PC crashes, so I doubt it has anything to do with hardware.

I have done a clean install for the fourth time, every time changing something, be it following the tutorial to restarting between uninstalling and reinstalling. I got some kind of crash report, which I will paste below.

I could not find a person with a similar issue. This is really irritating, as during the lockdown I need to work at home, but I can not use my preferred browser to do tasks. Maybe it has something to do with Facebook Container, which I installed after it was announced to me.

Thank you

It may the container, try booting firefox in safe mode to see

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button Fx57Menu, click Help Fx57Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

Fx68SafeMode

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

  • I can not paste the crash report*

What do you mean by this?

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozillacrashreporter Open the file browser/explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win XP/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted

Mac OS: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports/submitted Linux: /home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Copy the most recent 5-7 File Names in the folder. Post the information in the reply box.

To Eve: Thank you for the help. The only thing that seemed to stop the crashing is being in Safe Mode. Unfortunately, I still crashed after I disabled extensions, I was already using the default theme, and I had turned off hardware acceleration previously.

To FredMcD: I could not post it at first because I think I reached character limit and did not want to double post. There is only one crash file in the directory. Only once did I have Firefox ask me to fill in a report.

The report is several days old and for the prior version of the browser.

Make sure Avast is up to date. If the problem continues, disable it.

Note: From Bug Report 1560486: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1560486#c18 User: I don't know if it's too early to say (been using FF for 3 hours) but removing the e-Recidency software (onepin-opensc-pkcs11.dll) seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks. Should I search for the .dll file in my PC and delete it? Would that be a possible fix? Avast was up to date.

Remove the e-Recidency software. If it's not the problem, you can always reinstall it.
