No that is the address bar, but when on any website there is no room to type anything in there. What looks like a blank spot in the middle turns into a down arrow when the cursor is placed there. It's funny, because when I'm on Google's home page I CAN type in an address, but I CAN'T if I'm on any other website.

Kindly go to customize and drag the bookmarks bar down to the vacant toolbar below. This will fix your problem.

Hi lkarpman, is the situation that you have a main toolbar with buttons but no address bar, or is the entire main toolbar missing?

One possible reason for toolbars to be missing is Full Screen view. On Windows, the F11 function key switches between regular and full screen views.

If the main toolbar is present but it doesn't have an address bar, could you try using the "Restore Defaults" button on the Customize page? More info in this article:

Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

To access Customize when the main toolbar is missing, you can use this method:

  • tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar
  • click View > Toolbars > Customize

Any progress so far?

Restore defaults would create a lot of work re-creating my customizations and add ons. My screen in not in full screen view. Here is a screen shot.

Your address bar is there on the right of your bookmarks. you just have to remove that bookmarks list in customize or drag them to the empty bookmarks bar just below.

You probably also want to drag your search bar to the other side of the address bar.

That's a search box not an address bar. Typing a URL in there only takes me to my search engine's listing, not directly to the site like an address bar entry would.

I see a search bar to the left of your bookmarks and an address bar to the right of your bookmarks. Are you saying both are functioning as search bars?

The down arrow is the frequently/recently used site button that only appears when you hover the address bar. You can put your cursor into it using Ctrl+L (or F6, or Alt+D) but you probably still won't be able to see the characters.

I think the auto-sizing algorithm is giving the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" too much space, taking it away from the address bar. Not sure if you can solve that by moving controls around, or whether that just creates other problems, such as the bookmarks going onto the overflow menu.

I think manually overriding this is possible, by creating a userChrome.css file. That would let you set a rule for the minimum width of the address bar and then Firefox should squeeze down some of the other items. I say "should" but I definitely haven't tested it myself.
