How do I easily remove things from top sites, without having to mouseover/click something 3 times? Why can't I just click once, or ctrl+delete?

Hi

If you want to control what appears in tiles under the Top Sites section then best is to pin bookmarked pages or pages you visited to each of the tiles. If you use Dismiss in the three-dot button drop-down then Firefox stores a hashed version of the website in a pref on the about:config page, so this pref can grow quite large if you dismiss pages often. Using "Remove from history" doesn't has this disadvantage.

Changes made manually on the Firefox Home page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned => websites pinned to a tile
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked => websites removed by clicking the X (Dismiss) button in a tile

I'm confused what your answer has to do with my question, since nothing in your explanation has anything to do with making dismiss or remove from history any quicker or easier to do.

And doesn't remove from history both 1. Still require three clicks, and 2. Remove it from my history?

The point is why you want to remove items from the Firefox Home page in the first place. If those pages wouldn't be there then there is no need to remove them. Tiles show recently visited pages by default, so I proposed possible options to fill tiles with pages that you want to keep, so you wouldn't have to remove unwanted pages. I'm not aware of a way to remove pages easier from this page apart from the steps you posted via the three-dot icon.
