Here is the error message I get:

"Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing Server (SMTP) xxxxxxx time out. Try again".

Email works fine as long as my messages are really short or I'm replying to some really small email. However, if I forward anything of size (even under 1 Meg) or reply to something that is a bit bigger, I get the above message.

This started happening immediately after I upgraded to Windows 10. I can forward or reply to these emails from another installation of Thunderbird on another computer in my house that is running Windows 7.

I have tried running Win10 in safe mode. I have tried Thunderbird in safemode. I have doubled mailnews.tcptimeout to 200. None of these changes seem to make any difference.

I would appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Here is an update. I gave up on Thunderbird. I tried the Mail program that came with Windows 10. It developed some sending problems as well. I tried Inky and MailBird. I also had problems sending. This pointed to an issue with the computer and not Thunderbird or any of these other programs. I couldn't find any solutions on the web that worked for me. I then did a clean install of Windows 10. I had to reinstall all programs. Thunderbird has been working OK for me for the past couple weeks. So my problem is now resolved.

The one detail anyone would want to know in order to try to help you was given as "xxxxxxx".

Sorry. I didn't know that was important and was trying to error on the side of privacy. I guess I'm not giving away anything. xxxxx = smtp.googlemail.com

The usual suspect in such cases, especially with a well-known email provider such as googlemail would be your antivirus. But you have said the problem persists in Windows Safe Mode and this normally disables any antivirus.

For the record, can you tell us what, if any, antivirus you're using?

Thank you,

I have Windows Defender. I turned it off, and tried forwarding an email that has a 317 kB attachment, and it timed out as well.

Sorry, I forgot to include one clue. A few days ago I uninstalled Thunderbird, and then downloaded the latest version and installed it. I was already running the latest version, but I thought the uninstall and reinstall might help. After the new install, Thunderbird worked for a day or two. Then it reverted back to timing out.

I have this problem but only with emails being sent to Scandinavia using "reply" function. Cut and paste the message and it goes through. All others go through.
