in windows 7 it has duplicated every email, and can not be stopped

My wife had Vista & MS Outlook. The MS said IE explorer 9 HAD to be replaced by version 11 - which will NOT work in Vista?! MUST update to Win7 - works fine but, NO OUTLOOK?!

I myself have used only Thunderbird for years, with Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 without problems, so I installed and migrated her e-s to Tbird. She HAD about 900 emails in my wife's account. Wwhen she uses it, it is set to automatically get new emails, and has the message display panel open.

When it starts, it downloads new messages - they show at the top of the list as they arrive. Then Tbird reads ALL of the old e-s - progress bar is at the bottom right, while the HDD light shows rapid drive activity, and the header panel counter spins. THEN - mouse cursor locks, no key combination works, including ctl-alt-del, HDD light blinks slowly --- FOREVER ie more than an hour. How can I edit the old emails without running Thunderbird, so that I can delete all of the duplicates, and most of the old ones. Or what do you suggest?
