Within 'All Bookmarks' (as revealed by Ctrl-Shift-B) I have the 'Bookmarks Toolbar' - on the toolbar I have a folder called 'Bookmarks' which I have been using to maintain bookmarks through many versions of Firefox. At some point a fault has occured when I do the following steps: 1. Add bookmark (Ctrl-D) 2. Choose Folder 'Bookmarks Toolbar' 3. Click on down-arrow icon ('Show all the bookmarks folders')

      • At this point the Bookmarks tab on the bookmarks folder disappears!

The only solution I can find so far is to resort to a backup (via Ctrl-Shift-D), Import and Backup. At that point if I follow the same steps again the problem does not recur.

The problem recurs after I restart Firefox.

Any direction much appreciated.

A bit of further information: Having started up Firefox if I choose 'Show All bookmarks' (Ctrl-Shift-D) this has the same effect = the Bookmarks entry on the Toolbar vanishes before my eyes. The result is that any bookmarks set previously are lost.

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac:<Command>) <Shift> B.

Are these intact?

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.

Access this thru the Add-ons Manager. Select Options. Check all of the tests, then press Execute on the bottom.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Are you using Sync?

Having started Firefox if I do Ctrl-Shift-B the Bookmarks entry in the Toolbar disappears (it was there, now it is gone). This takes me to the 'Library' which I am assuming is the "Bookmarks Manager" = I can't find anything labelled as such. Neither "Alt" or "F10" do anything for me (I am using a PC).

Have run all maintenance tasks using addin on Places database. No reported errors. Problem recurs.

I believe the only problem I have is with Bookmarks therefore have tried what feels like the last resort and deleted places.sqlite. On restart of Firefox all seems well BUT close Firefox and restart and the problem recurs. To put it another way I am able to repeat the problem consistently.

I am not using Sync (as far as I am aware).

Having tried all methods of 'maintenance' to no avail should I be reporting this as a suspected bug?

Let's try a few other things first.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Did you try "Organize > Undo" in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) to see if that brings back this folder?

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database file then move all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to a backup location to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

This didn't make any difference, i.e. the same sequence of problems occured at each stage.

The "Undo" option is greyed out,

I have tried all these options to no avail.

I suppose the obvious question is why would Firefox deliberately remove an entry on the Toolbar (?), i.e. what form of *corruption* could do this?
