Whenever I open a Youtube video which uses html5 the brightness on my monitor jumps up considerably and doesn't always return to normal after closing the tab or Firefox completely and logging off is required, or sunglasses.

This has been happening for a while, as of 22nd May 2015 I have Ff 38.0.1, all plugins are up to date. Using Nvidia GTX 760, driver up to date.

The problem doesn't happen with if I force use of Flash (with add-on), it doesn't happen at all with Chrome. It is very annoying.

Thanks

Could you test with hardware acceleration disabled to confirm that it's a problem with how Firefox works with Nvidia:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This takes effect the next time you exit Firefox and start it up again. Any difference?

Turned off hardware acceleration and problems stops. As a test then re-enabled and uninstalled Nvidia driver and clean reinstalled, but the brightness increase came back.

FYI, I replicated every setting, add-on, plugin etc on my second machine without any issues. That is 32-bit with a GT 8600.

At least I know how to stop it now.

Thanks.

Additional +++++++++

After re-enabling hardware acceleration the same Nvidia brightness boost started happening when using VLC player and Windows Media Player until Ff HA disabled and computer restarted. I don't know whether this just a peculiarity with me (might go for a full re-installation soon) but guessing something is getting switched on when it shouldn't.

Thanks. Do you want to paste your driver version for future reference? You can copy/paste it from the "Graphics" section of the support information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

It's a couple tables down in the document. While copy/paste is a little messy, I think it will be reasonably readable.
