Can't download or send any messages
Away for the weekend accessing email via a browser on Verizon website. When back at home Thunderbird had not downloaded any messages since the day I left. 'Get Messages' generates the script in the lower left corner: Connecting to pop.verizon.... Which times out. There are no error messages. Shut down windows fire wall and exited/disabled antivirus.
I am still getting message in Verizon web interface. So messages are on the server.
Thunderbird is up to date 31.5.0. Emptied my inbox, moved all messages to other folders and deleted Inbox and Inbox.msf. restarted per help instructions. Don't know what else to do. Thanks, Marc

Check your firewall and see if it is blocking the new version of Thunderbird. Thunderbird should be listed as Allowed or similar. This has been the common problem lately.
I disabled the windows firewall but I will check.
Went here but don't see any reference to Thunderbird.
I do not use the windows firewall. I have Norton Security Suite and use that firewall.
Two inbound rules are blocked but I don't know what they are. See image.

From that screenshot you do allow incoming connections to the nginx webserver. I'd hope you know what this is all about.
Thunderbird behaves exactly the same when in TB safe mode.
A friend recommended the nginx web server because it is faster. other than that I don't know what it is.
Thanks
I got it to work! Then it stopped working. TB downloaded the messages on the server but hasn't done it again since. In this thread:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2857589&p=13696049
It recommends deleting The cert8.db file from the Thunderbird profile (see last entry in thread). I renamed them (I have three profiles for the three accounts at Verizon) cert8.old. TB will regenerate them. Restarted my computer and launched TB and all my files downloaded from the server.
This is where I found the solution that led to the forum listed above:
