accidently delected my contacts, how to get them back

I have an address book setup with a number of what I'll call sub books for want of a better name. I used to be able to copy a contact from the address book to a sub book. I have either forgotten how to do that or something may have changed. I tried to drag & drop the address from the main book to the sub book but that doesn't work any longer. What am I missing here?
Had to reload Thunderbird. Where is the address book stored? Old method not working.
A message posted here in 2015 describes the process but it doesn't work for me. File>New does not offer me 'Mailing List'. Where do I go to find it?

Thunderbird is used on a domain network of 100 computers, all connected to a Carddav address book. About 10 computers have stopped syncing their address book. Reconnecting the address book doesn't help. Newly added email addresses don't sync. Everything is fine on the other computers, all running Windows 10.

We have an email account that is gmail behind the scenes but uses a front end alias (e.g. name@organisation.ca). Adding the email account to Thunderbird is no problem, TB recognizes that it is a gmail account. However, it does not automatically add the address book. I tried to add manually using the new Accounts Hub CardDav putting in the email address under UserName and putting in imap.gmail.com:993 for the URL/Hostname. It does not work and I get the error: Component returned failure code: 0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE) [nsISupports.QueryInterface]

How can I extract or retrieve the "Username:" variables and "Email" variables in the Body text to set up a mailing list or Address Book.
