I have Thunderbird 102.15.1. I can receive emails from my Hotmail account (set up as POP3), and up until 22/09/2024 I could also send emails through Hotmail.

At some point after 22/09/2024 I am no longer able to send emails through Hotmail.

I have the following setting for the outgoing server (SMTP) (which worked fine until 22/09/2024):

Description: hotmail server name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 Connection security: STARTTLS Authentication method: Normal password

When I try to send an email I get the following message:

"Enter your password for adriharp@hotmail.com on smtp.office365.com:"

with the password dialog box underneath.

If I change the authentication method to OAUTH2 for the outgoing SMTP server, I very briefly see the "enter credentials" screen flash up, then the Sending message box appears and Thunderbird hangs until I hit the Cancel button. If I leave it to run, I get this message:

"Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again."

If I try to generate a new app password in my Microsoft account and enter this with the outgoing SMTP server authentication set to Normal Password, I get this message:

"Login to server smtp.office365.com with username adriharp@hotmail.com failed."

I use OAUTH2 authentication for the incoming Hotmail server (SSL/TLS on outlook.office365.com). This works fine.

My questions are: - does anyone know why this change happened in the last few weeks ? - how can I change my settings in Thunderbird (and/or Microsoft Hotmail a/c) to send emails via my Hotmail account ? - do I need to upgrade Thunderbird to send emails via my Hotmail account ?

I am running Windows 7 on this laptop so I think my options to upgrade are limited to 115.10.01.

Thanks for your help.

I have Thunderbird 128.2.3 (32 bit). I have set Server type IMAP mail server, then Server Name to: outlook.office365.com and Outgoing Server: smtp.office365.com I have OAuth2 on both. When I enter, I get a new Thunderbird input that requires a password. My password does not work, the therefore my email account does not work.

I have confirmed that my Outlook Password is correct. I have cancelled my Outlook passwords. I have installed the 2 step verification option.

What needs to be done so I can use Thunderbird on my PC Win 10? Thank you, Ed

I have Thunderbird software version 128.2.3esr (64-bit). I have 5 email address accounts 1 with google.com and 4 with outlook.com. All work perfect except 1 of the outlook.com accounts. All the outlook.com accounts are configured the same (settings, account settings etc). The error message is always "pop3.server3.2: Got an error name=pop3PasswordFailed, the server said: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. 2 Pop3Client.sys.mjs:1576:18".I did not change passwords. In fact, I can go on internet to outlook.com email logon web page and access the email account perfectly, even though it fails everytime with Thunderbird. (it still is same password, never changed). Plese help, I have spent some time trying to solve on my own.

I just started having issues with Thunderbird. When I open it I'm getting the error: Login to server imap-mail.outlook.com with username has failed. I've tried entering my password, no luck. Changed my password and can open my hotmail account in outlook so I know the new password is right, but still no luck in Thunderbird. After too many Retry attempts I get an error in the bottom corner that says something like: the server is offline or may be disconnected (disappears too quick to catch it).

Thoughts on how to resolve?

Thanks, Kevin

Hi, Thunderbird was working fine in the morning, but later in the day, it suddenly stopped downloading messages from my Hotmail inbox and asked for my password again. When I entered my password, I got the following error message:

"Sending of password for user mazyarm@hotmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop-mail.outlook.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password."

Thunderbird won't sign in to check emails. I also get the message:

"Login to server pop-mail.outlook.com with username mazyarm@hotmail.com failed."

And those are the messages I now get whenever I click on the Get Messages button. However, I am still able to access my Hotmail account directly using the Firefox web browser, so I know that my username and password are not the problem.

Does anyone know what's going on? How do I solve this problem? Thank you, Maz

Yahoo has made changes recently, supposedly in the name of security, that have had quite the opposite effect for those of us who use Thunderbird for email on shared computers. Before Yahoo's recent changes, Thunderbird would ask users to enter their password before connecting to the email server. This is no longer the case. Now, when logging into Thunderbird, there is no dialog box popping up for entering a password, Thunderbird just automatically connects. This needs to be corrected. Hopefully someone at Mozilla is listening and will take action.

So far, the only work-around I have found has been to go into Account Settings, Thuderbird Preferences, Saved Passwords, and deleting the oauth password that was automatically saved when I jumped through Yahoo's hoops to get my email working again after they implemented their recent changes. This has to be done EACH SESSION and, if this is done, then the next time I want to get my email I have to repeat the process of generating a new oauth token by logging into Yahoo by way of my browser, which will then be saved once again in Thunderbird and will, once again, need to be deleted at the end of the session. This is obviously a colossal PITA.

Someone PLEASE FIX THIS!

Hi everyone! I completely cleaned TB (using BCUninstaller) from the system, reinstalled, and it still won't add a google account. Tried different ways several times. I never had any problems with gmail in previous versions. Been using it for over a decade.

Before that, I had the previous TB. I decided to uninstall it completely and put the latest clean version to set everything up again.

Hi.

I've been at it for an hour now. Found nothing in the help, a few things in Google that no longer work... I've updated my MS password including Hotmail/Outlook.com, so no I need to do that in Thunderbird. I can't find where that's done ? (thunderbird windows latest release)

"account parameters" has something for the SMTP server, but not for the IMAP one.

Thanks for any help.

duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1466011 thread

When asked to re-enter the appropriate password I enter the never ending merry-go-round......I have 6 addresses. Whilst it is possible to access then via their specific accounts held with Microsoft this is time consuming, hence the preference of Thunderbirdb which up until now has been trouble free for approx 15 years. This unnecessary development makes me wonder why I only need a user naame aand password to access via Microsoft. I have tried every method kindly provided by other users to no avail. Can anyone provide the correct server setting for both IMAP and SMTP? As I have said these 'new' authentification/s are in my opinion tantamount to using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. I hope my explantion makes sense? Surely I cannot be alone?

This just happened with a new update on only one of my two gmail accounts 128.2.3esr

I was not getting email on one account, so I deleted that one account. Now I can't add it back to TB. I get "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." Double check password and logged on with it on Edge browser, no problem.

I uninstalled / reinstalled Thunderbird with the same result.

Thank you!

I read that I now need a secure mail key so I can access my emails with third party app Thunderbird. I have created a secure mail key at att.com which is part of Yahoo. My email app is att.yahoo.com. I was told the passwords for Thunderbird would be within the profile under the Profile Folder but I cannot find them there. All I want to do is update my password within the Profile Folder and it seems like it would easier to break into Fort Knox.

Although OK 2 days ago, I am no longer receiving emails on one of my email addresses Instead, I am asked for a new password. I would certainly do that but I don't know how. Google tells me to click om the hamburger icon and then how to get to "saved passwords". But when I click on "show Passwords", thinking I might be able to change an email PW there, I am asked to verify my identity and provide a password. I haven't a clue what password is wanted here. My simple Thunderbird PW I set up many years ago does not work. So how do I change my Password for my Email address that no longer works?

Microsoft are again complaining about normal password login.

Today I have updated to Version 128.2.0esr (64-bit)

I have set outgoing server to StartTLS and OAuth2 and it is fine.

When i set OAuth2 in server settings and try to retrieve mail i get "Host contacted, sending login............" and it sticks at that point with no error messages from Thunderbird or Microsoft.

If i revert to "Normal Password" it is fine.

When microsoft first complained i turned on two step authorisation and the used their option (cannot remember what it was called now) to create a login password/key for thunderbird so that it would still work for "Normal Password" setting

How do we get round Microsoft's obstacles???>

Today I changed the password on one of my gmail accounts. I edited the password in Settings in 3 places: imap, smpt and oauth. Next time I started Thunderbird I got a gmail authentication pop-up. Se first screenshot. The email address was shown correctly. When I clicked Next, I got the failure message. See second screenshot. I rebooted and tried many times with same result.

I have several other gmail accounts on this same Thunderbird client and they continue to work correctly. I know my password is correct because I can access this email account both directly on gmail and also on another computer where I set up Thunderbird just to test for this problem.

Any idea what is going on and how to fix it?

I successfully changed the authentication method for my SMTP server to OAuth.

But when I try to set my IMAP server to OAuth, I get this error message:

The IMAP server imap-mail.outlook.com does not support the selected authentication method. Image attached. Note: I couldn't capture the whole image, as Firefox insisted on displaying the error message at the bottom of the screen where I could only see half of it. But I confirmed OAuth was the issue by changing it back & forth several times.

I thought we had to change both SMTP & IMAP. Did I misunderstand something?

I can’t complete the steps to change to OAuth for my Hotmail account.

The Microsoft site says to change the Authentication Method on the SMTP Server dialog to OAuth. But the authentication method drop down list doesn't include OAuth. Here are the only options in the list:

  • No authentication
  • Normal password (this is the one I currently use)
  • Encrypted password
  • Kerberos / GSSAPI
  • NTLM

I use Windows 11 and Thunderbird version 128.20esr (64-bit), Windows.

How do I fix this problem?
