Firefox URL bar automatically populating odd websites?

more options

I've come back to Firefox for the first time since Chrome launched! Manifest V3 basically killing Ad Blockers was the last straw.

Anyway, I'm having an issue with Firefox and I can't figure out why - when I type in the start of a URL, it's sometimes suggesting sites that I've never visited / don't have book marked etc.

For example, if I type in d it automatically puts in dotesports.com - I've never visited this site, it's not bookmarked etc so I don't understand why it's being populated instead of sites I do visit that begin with the letter d. Please see attached screenshot Firefox D.

I've tried fiddling with my search settings, but it's not made a difference. Please see the attached screenshot.

I've checked my extensions, but they're all pretty standard / well known ones and none of them would be altering the search bar like this. I've attached a screenshot of my extensions.

Additionally, when I start typing in gm (expecting it to autofill gmail.com) it never seems to do so, even though it's one of my most visited websites. It doesn't have this problem with other websites I frequently visit, only gmail - any idea why this is / how I can fix it?

I haven't heard of that e-sports site. Usually when a suggestion populates directly in the address bar, it has been visited in your Firefox in the past. You can search for it in history using the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+H) or "Manage History".

In the tiny search box at the upper right, enter dot and pause for matches. If you do see something you want to remove, I suggest a deep flush: right-click the item and choose Forget About This Site. Firefox may take a while to do some background cleaning, but hopefully that will prevent it from being suggested in the future.

If it's not in history, any chance it's in bookmarks? I don't see the little star on the icon in the address bar drop-down, so maybe not, but just in case, you can click All Bookmarks in the left column of the Library window and now use the tiny search box to check bookmarks.

For Gmail, the actual address doesn't contain Gmail:

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox

I don't know whether in-URL-bar autofill is supposed to also match off the page title, or whether that only works for matches in the drop-down.

On a separate note, your address bar drop-down shows signs of old userChrome.css rules from the Firefox 76 days. Those rules recently became obsolete, so you should remove everything in code blocks with the

[breakout-extend]

selector.

It wasn't in bookmarks, it was in my history, but only because I'd typed d, expected it to show another site I visit that begins with d and pressed enter.

Good spot - it's probably something that changed several years ago and I've never noticed it, I just always went to gmail.com and it's redirected me automatically.

I'll see if it starts being suggested if I type ma....

You've lost me here - where exactly am I looking to find the code blocks?

I think the reason Firefox doesn't add gmail.com to history is that it immediately redirects.

Regarding the address bar drop-down, yours is popped up out of its usual space. This is usually caused by old code in a userChrome.css file. Do you recall ever setting up a userChrome.css file to modify Firefox's toolbar area??
