For the past several TB updates my create new mail windows are stuck on my screen. I cannot move them around unless I inch it along corner by corner. It remembers the last position and opens it again there. I used to be able to move around the compose window without a problem. Anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

I'm on Mac OS 12.6, TB 102.5.1 (waiting for the Windows 36 bug to be fixed before updating).

Was the css working in TB 91, and then not working after the update to 102? I can't debug your css, but it's possible some part of it is incorrect or obsolete for 102, i.e. some element has to be changed to be compatible with 102.

Does it happen in safe/troubleshoot mode (hold Option when launching TB)?

No it doesn't. Moves just fine.

I have a userChrome file to govern appearance, but never before has it frozen any windows. The only global setting is font and the only thing in it pertaining to the compose window is this:

/* ::::: COMPOSE MESSAGE WINDOW ::::: */

/* ----------- toolbar in compose window ----------

  1. msgHeadersToolbar

*/
  1. composeContentBox /* ------ color behind addressing box lines and color -------- */ {

padding-top: 0px !important; padding-left:20px !important; padding-right: 20px !important; padding-bottom: 15px !important; /* background-color: DarkSeaGreen !important; */ background-image: url("fantasy-butterflyblue4741740_1280.jpg") !important; }

  1. FormatToolbar {

background-color: Transparent !important; color: Cyan !important; }

/* ---------for different color than global toolbarbutton setting----------- */ #FormatToolbar > toolbarbutton { width: 25px !important; padding: 0px !important; color: Cyan !important; }

  1. addresses-box {

/* background-image: url("fantasy-butterflyblue4741740_1280.jpg") !important; */ background-color: Transparent !important; padding: 0px !important; /* background-color: DarkSeaGreen !important; */ }

  1. addresses-box .address-container {

color: Gainsboro !important; }

.address-container { font-family: Delius !important; }

/* #subject-box --------Changes Subject title color------- { color: Gainsboro !important; } */

/*

* --------------------------------------------------------------------
* end of Compose Message Window section
*/

userChrome.css is disabled in safe mode, so that is the first item I would examine. If css is correct, you could try disabling hardware acceleration, if it's enabled, in Settings/General, or launch again in safe mode, 'Reset toolbars & controls', and 'Make changes & restart'.

CSS was correct and worked fine and then it didn't without changes to the file.

Hardware acceleration was already disabled. I tried both settings and no change.

I reset the toolbars and controls and also no change.

Strangely, after I had opened in safe mode, closed, and opened again before trying your last suggestions, I responded to a message and the response window moved three inches across my screen when I dragged it, to my shock, and then froze again.

I don't remember at exactly what point it stopped working. I think upon moving from 91 to 102, I had to change something in my configsys for TB to accept my userChrome file again, but my compose window moved then. Sometime after it stopped, and it wasn't connected to an update.

I'm going to take out my userChrome to see if it works and then put it back and see what happens. That should help ascertain if it's a problem with my CSS.

I think you will find it was V68 or 78 you changed hidden preferences. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1298376

However there have been and will be going forward significant changes in Thunderbird internal layout and the names and functions of user interface elements. If you are not competent and comfortable determining the element names and settings from the developer toolbox (Ctrl+Shift+I) you are unlikely to find anyone offering support in this forum. Thunderbird has never offered support for userchrome in it's support forum. So while there has been lots of discussions at times and some offering code that folk have that works, there is no support for userchrome.

Note that looking at the source indicates that he entire window is in transition from XUL to Xhtml. What that means for customization I really do not know.

Gotcha. The problem is caused by my userChrome. I removed it and the compose window freed. At least I know where to look now, but the problem is not in the compose window or global settings of the CSS. If I completely remove them the problem remains. I know this forum cannot offer support on userChrome, but do you have any ideas in general where I should look?

Thanks for getting me closer to fixing the problem.

Noted. Thanks. I'll have to look in developer toolbox for element names because some elements in my compose window are missing.

Side note, I'm not liking the address book change. My CSS doesn't touch it anymore. Boo.

If you post your userChrome here, insert it between < pre > and < /pre > tags (without the spaces). Otherwise, the TB support forum on mozillazine often has good advice on the subject. It also helps to describe what you're trying to modify, or supply pictures. Many results can be found by searching the web with something like 'thunderbird userchrome message composer address box color'.

I decided to go through my entire code and clean it up. In the process I found a missing bracket twice. Fixed those and my compose window will move now. I also figured out how to get my tag colors back on my mail, so I'm a happy camper. Thanks, everyone!
