why do i have a problem loading web pages? the little circle just keeps going round and round.

On too many websites, the loading of the page hangs up and I have to manually stop the page from loading and attempt to reload it. This happens on a number of web sites. I thought Firefox was suppose to speed up the loading of web pages. What can I do to correct this problem
