firefox 4.0 downloads but does not appear under "about firefox after restart. mac OSx

i followed the instructions to upgrade to 4.0. downloaded the upgrade. dragged the icon to the apps folder. dragged that icon from the apps folder to the dock. but "about firefox" still says 3.6.14
