IOS/Mozilla VPN installation issue

I am running Firefox for IOS on an iPhone SE (14.5.1) and have just installed Mozilla VPN using my existing VPN account. The primary VPN device is an iMac running OS10.15.7 (Firefox 89.0.1 sync'd to the iPhone app). The VPN appears to be working normally on the iMac. However, when I downloaded the Mozilla app the VPN attached itself automatically to a Budapest server without any manual intervention from me and despite continuous attempts, was unable to connect to it. As a result all external communication via the iPhone became blocked and I have had to delete the VPN app. Once the VPN app was installed and connected to my VPN account, I was unable to switch it off or change any settings.

Can anyone suggest what went wrong?
