How to stop opening a blank tab when downloading attached file in gmail?

Whichever option is enabled ("automatically save" or "always ask" for .doc files), Firefox always opens an empty tab called "https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tab=wm" when I click on an attached file in gmail.

I want it to download attached file without opening this useless empty tab. Is that possible? (tried with plugins disabled, same problem).
