Firefox keeps showing web push notifications despite there being no websites with notification permission granted. How can I get rid of these?

I had 'default' and 'default-release' - the two profiles that come with debian. Neither of these had any notifications allowed.

I ended up purging ~/.mozilla. So far so good, none of those pesky notifications.
