Restore previous session, in history, is an important setting. It has now disappeared completely as an option even though restore windows and tabs is ticked. Need to go deeper than the superficial help .

If this option is not displayed, that means the session should already be restored. Did you get your windows and tabs from the last time?

I appear to be set to be using private windows (my best guess for what is happening) and FF is not setting up a Restore Prior Session. I need that restore function for crash repair . how do I get it back?

Hi, please ask a new question for that. But I can already tell you that I don't think Firefox can restore a private session. That's the point of private browsing that history is cleared once Firefox is closed.
