Thunderbird 91.0 - how to tell if there are new messages since last check

I see that in 91.0 the tray icon has changed. Now the icon is the regular icon for TB and it has a red dot if there are unread messages.

In previous versions there as a white envelope that only showed up if there were new messages since the last check for new messages.

Is there any indication now if new messages have arrived?

I always have unread messages so really relied on the white envelope icon to notify me if I had received new messages that I need to look at.
