I have researced this.

In options, "When Firefox starts" drop-down is set to "Show my home page".

I have located and deleted the user.js file.

In the about:config file "browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash" is set it to false.

What else can it be???

You can check if you have an user.js file in the Firefox profile folder that sets the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once pref to true.

  http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
  http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
hope it will sort out your problem

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

You may also have to remove the backups in the sessionstore-backups folder.

There is no sessionstore.js file. I deleted the contents of the backups in the sessionstore-backups folder.

I have Firefox synced across 3 Windows 8 devices. I have tried all the above steps on all 3 devices.

I did a reset on one device on Friday without success, however, today, the reset seems to have solved the issue.
