A week ago I got a BSOD that ruined settings of most of my extensions and most likely some of Firefox's settings too (at least it erased my custom findbar.matchdiacritics value, but probably not just that). After that I moved Firefox's folder and re-installed it. I also created a new profile. The 2 profiles are synced. Because of that, the new profile got (almost) all the extensions from the old one automatically. Then, I decided to do a clean install of those extensions (the reason why is a story for another ticket). So, while both profiles were opened, I removed one extension in the new profile, waited for a bit and checked the old one to see if it got removed from there too. At first it wasn't, so I thought they are not synced (anymore). Yeah, sure, but once I removed all extensions from the new one, the old one woke up and removed all extensions from there too. Great! Awesome! Loved it wholeheartedly! It really had to wait until I removed them all, didn't it? Anyway, I had a backup of my old profile, so I restored my extensions and their settings on both profiles eventually. So now I have clean installs of Firefox and extensions. Back to the issue. I can't load Steam pages (at least store.steampowered and steamcommunity) normally anymore. They load forever, and if the blue dot eventually stops moving (after an insane amount of time), it's either a plain white screen, or badly loaded page with most images missing.

  • Edge loads them just fine
  • Steam client loads them just fine.
  • If I turn on VPN plugin (I use Browsec), then it works. It's like that in both old and new profile. That's why I mentioned that funny little story before.
  • Tried Troubleshoot Mode, didn't help.
  • Tried to selectively disable some extensions, same.
  • Obviously tried to remove cookies, Ctrl + F5 and whatnot. Btw, if I clean everything and try to load it, then it's (most likely?) a white page, but if I turn the VPN on and load it first, and then turn it off and reload it, then it will look a bit better, but still will load forever with some media missing. (Which kinda make sense since something was already cached.)
  • Tried to change proxy settings from “Use system proxy settings” to “No proxy” and “Auto-detect proxy settings for this network”, nah-ah.
  • Tried to disable DNS in Firefox's settings, no siree.
  • The console throws different warning and errors every time (that are probably even unrelated). Or none at all.
  • Probably tried something I already forgot about.

Also, it seems the culprit is actually Akamai (it's where the Steam stores its media) or whatever is preventing reaching it. Because it often shows something like “Waiting for community.akamai.steamstatic.com...” in the status bar for a long time. It seems like the problem is within Firefox's settings, and it also looks like settings aren't synced across profiles (or at least some aren't, I definitely had to configure them on the new profile manually). Anyway, I am out of ideas and my butthurt thrust is about to deliver me to Uranus. Thanks for your attention!

Is there a way to completely opt out of having AI in my browser?

I find recent implementations of AI in Firefox quite frankly disgusting. I don't want to see it, I don't want to use it, I don't want it suggested to me. Not only it's unneeded, but also all your LLMs are a waste of electricity, fresh water and are a threat to my privacy, and we don't even mention all the legal trouble AI scraping creates.

I need a switch to completely remove any mention of LLMs/AIs in my Firefox browser unless I search for it on the internet (and, trust me, I wont; I'd prefer to continue thinking for myself and having real people with skills and talents do things if I can't do them myself) and have none of them touch me in any way. Kill that thing with fire.

Ideally Firefox, one that advertises itself as a secure browser with respect towards its users, shouldn't have any mention of AI in the first place, you know. But since companies are in a craze about it for some unknown reason (trust me, we don't want it; if I want to be lied to, I'd go to a paediatrician to talk about my symptoms, not a language model I can't trust with my data), at least give your users an option to get that awful thing out of their browser it they want to.

Have a nice day. <3

icloud sign in fails with firefox: "Failed to verify your identity. Try again."

Hi, I'm using Firefox 142 on Ubuntu 24.04. It's a fresh install. I cannot sign in icloud.com with Firefox even though it works with other browsers like Brave. I deleted all cookies and site data and disabled extensions (KeePassXC). It doesn't help. I tried in new private window. No success. I copy my password from a password manager, so, no, I haven't mistyped it.

Here's what I do:

  1. Open Firefox and go to icloud.com
  2. Click on the "Sign In" button
  3. Enter my Apple-ID and click on the arrow on the right end of the "Email or Phone Number" field

At this point Brave behaves differently than Firefox. See below for how Brave behaves.

Firefox: -> A "Password" field appears (no buttons "Continue with Password" and "Sign in with Passkey")

  1. Enter my password and click on the arrow on the right end of the "Password" field

-> Error message "Failed to verify your identity. Try again" appears. See icloud.png

Brave: -> Two buttons "Continue with Password" and "Sign in with Passkey" appear. See icloud-with-brave.png

  1. Click on button "Continue with Password"

-> A "Password" field appears.

  1. Enter my password and click on the arrow on the right end of the "Password" field

-> 2FA code is sent to my iPhone -> "Two-Factor Authentication" form opens... etc. complete sign in successfully

Please help!

Unfortunately I cannot attach the HAR file from the login sequence because the password is included. However, I attached some screenshots from the Web Developer Tools. It seems to me that the login flow with Firefox is broken. I can't tell who's to blame, Apple of Firefox. The error message with Firefox is always the same, no matter whether I enter the correct password or rubbish. In Brave, however, there is a more precise error message when I enter a bad password. See icloud-with-brave-wrong-password.png

The Firefox family clearly has great disdain for the average American who doesn't want to be forced to read DNC / Democrat talking points via the "curated thread". Just be honest: it's the DNC curating Firefox's news just as the FBI curated who was allowed to talk on X. Just be up front with everyone. Firefox is sort of like the Bluesky of internet browsers. Here is a crazy concept: Instead of shoving your views down the throats of average Americans. How about let us citizens choose are own news sources? Crazy concept. Or are you Big Brother? Seriously. Get a clue if you want the 60% of ordinary people to keep using your browser as I have done for 15 years give or take. I get that I can turn off the propaganda your are displaying but choice would be better. If you would like to discuss, I'm all ears.

I installed Firefox on a fresh Win 11 install, and most of the the favicons are still generic on the Home Page several days later. Facebook, Ebay and Youtube are the only ones that appear consistently, sometimes other will display, but then be gone again the next time the app is launched. All other links just have the generic letter icons.

I tried deleting the 3 favicon files in the Profiles folder, but it did nothing. I've tried manually re-adding the links, still nothing. I removed the "S" from "https;//" and still nothing. The favicons all show up on my other machines which use Firefox on the same user account, so it is not a problem with the websites themselves.

Not sure if its related, but upon installing Firefox on this machine, it made Firefox on my Mac desktop absolutely freak out. I had to make a significant number of changes over the course of hours to fix everything, so many relating to favicons alone that I don't know what actually fixed it.

What else can I do to try and get these working? Why does Firefox apparently struggle with this particular feature across multiple OSes?

Thanks.

If I have taken photos in past years on a particular date, I get an email from Microsoft to review them. I normally do it on my phone, but today tried it from my computer. The path is "One Drive" "Photos" "Moments" and then "On This Day." If you click on the photos that in the graphic that looks like a movie strip, a montage of the photos shows up and you can also click on one. However, in Firefox, I click on a picture and the screen goes gray, but nothing ever loads. I thought it was a Microsoft issue so used their help function. The rep and I tried it, then cleared the cache, then tried it in a private setting. We got the same result every time. Then he tried it whatever Microsoft's browser is called and it worked just fine. They said it was a problem on the Mozilla Firefox end, so I'm reporting it. Please let me know if you can help me make it work. I don't like using anything except Firefox.
