How can I have the "ads" not appear on the screen, ... which make it necessary to scroll down to the web-results?
After I do a "Search" on the Internet the results are shown to me. At the beginning is a whole bunch of ads that I have no interest in. Having them there forces me to scroll down to get at the search-results I want to see. Is there a way I can block those ads from appearing? Thanks, Dick Battista

Which search site are you landing on? You can usually tell this from the address bar, where the site's domain name is in darker black type than the other letters.
If I understand your question correctly, ... my problem is not sensitive to certain websites. Just as an aside, I am using FireFox as my browser and the AVG search engine, which is Google driven. The results of any of my searches are put up on the screen with several ads (websites who obviously pay to have their websites listed BEFORE the search results. Those ads are in my way, ... I have to scroll down to get to the true search results. Dick
You're probably familiar with ads on Google, for example, up to 3 paid results on a subtly shaded background between the search box and the organic results. There's no built-in way to eliminate those; they are part of the page. If you want to remove those ads, you could consider using an add-on.
Other search engines may have a different layout. I haven't used AVG's, so I can't say for sure what it is supposed to look like.
However, some extensions that offer discounts or sneak onto your system with free software will inject their own ads into search engine results, completely independent of what is sent by the site. You can investigate that problem as follows:
Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > left column click Extensions
Most ad-generating extensions do not state in their name that they spam your search results, so it's easier to just disable everything that you don't know for sure is valuable to you as the first step in tracking down the problem.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any difference?
Try using the Adblock Plus extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
Thanks a HEAP. I'll go the "add-on" route and see what happens. I'm glad you were able to pare my list of possibilities down to just one. Have a great day !!! Dick Battista
