tried upgrading/clean install, 32b and 64b, version 102 when came out and now 102.5.0 always end up with a non-usable , no folders (sent, trash etc) top right menu does not open either had to go back with system restore and today even reinstall old version

does the new version require any windows component that the old one did not? (i may have disabled some features i dont need). all other programs work perfectly.

any advice will be appreciated, thanks

First, stabilize at some release level and then advise where you are. Someone here can then help you walk through an upgrade.

Check the error console for info related to folders or calendar.

Couple possibilities: 1. try starting Thunderbird as administrator 2. steps at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1797147#c14

Okay, I'm not the sharpest person here, but here are my suggested steps: - ensure antivirus is set to not intervene. MOST problems come from that. - exit Thunderbird - copy profile to a separate location: profile is normally at

  c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird

- keep a copy of version 91 in case things don't work out. - upgrade to current release. If any serious problems appear, exit Thunderbird - copy the backup directly back to where you copied from. You will be prompted to allow overwrites. - At this point, you're at new version and profile is exactly as it was in 91. - start thunderbird and - I hope - all is well.

You are correct, AV is a frequent cause of problems. But the AV approach doesn't match to the symptoms shown in the screen shot.

The reason I posted two seemingly oddball possibilities is a) I don't believe the copy profile approach will be successful, b) toad-hall's aka anje's work has identified some specific solutions that match the symptoms of the screen shot.

@Wayne I have much to learn. Thanks for your added insight.

thanks again - i see i am not alone with this issue, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1789326

i read this post but i am not sure if all rename/delete solutions apply before or after i install the 102.x version

also - is it possible to keep using 91.13.1 and install a separate 102.x version on the same machine under a different folder? so i wont have email downtime and wont have to use system restore if needed.

appreciate your input

You could install the portable version, create an account and log off. Then, in windows explorer locate where it stores the profile and its name (probably in the Data folder and name is probably profile). Then, when your version 91 is NOT running, copy the profile to the portable version's Data folder, delete the profile there, rename yours to whatever the other's name was. That would let you run ver 102 or ver 91. If you get 102 working properly, you could then upgrade 91 and copy that working profile back.

that sounds like a great idea, i did not know existed (nothing on official website). is the portable app on portableapps.com ok? or should i look elsewhere

Yes, I had posted the URL for you, but moderators always intervene when a URL is listed. portableapps dot com has it.

re :i read this post but i am not sure if all rename/delete solutions apply before or after i install the 102.x version

Install the current version first. Let it run If all looks blank, then you need to check the error console and post an image of what it shows. 'Tools' > 'Developer Tools' > 'Error Console'

This 'blank' issue can be caused by different problems. Sometimes, a simple case of deleting certain files and then starting Thunderbird using 'Run as Administrator' resolves the problem. If the error console is flagging up a problem with the calendar then you need to follow the solution to reset using a backup calendar file and then start Thunderbird using 'Run as Administrator'. Sometimes both actions are required.

But it would be very much appeciated if you can post an image showing the contents of the Error console as this info woud dictate what you need to do. It would also be useful from a debugging point of view as well.

thanks all again - i installed the portable version today - only to receive the blank non functional home screen :-( tried to run as admin - fixed all ! well... most:

1. importing profile did not go smoothly - had to import "home" calendar separately 2. setting the app to open as admin by default pops a windows message each time (i do not wish to set my windows UAC lower ) 3. portable app folder is now 560 mb (!) 91.13.1 is only 220mb and even if you add the profile folder its only 340mb

so i am removing the portable app and keep using the 91.13.1 version for now hopefully this version does not have too many sec issues

happy weekend all

Is there any particular reason you did not want to update, provide an image of error console so we can identify the caues in your case and then follow the advise on how to get it working correctly?

Did you try to get the update, but do not restart auto. Start Thunderbird using right click on icon and select 'Run as Administrator' Just to see if that was the only problem ? You would only need to use the 'Run as Admin' once. Please have found it works ok after that.

Some people needed to delete some files first - we can advise on that.

Toad-Hall - i DID upgrade as mentioned but with the portable version, with issues pointed out.

did not mention but also when got back to ver 91.13.1 with system restore it loaded super slow (10 secs on m.2 ssd instead of 1-2 secs).

i prefer not to mess too much with deleting sql files etc - i relly like TB and would like to use it but thinking maybe not worth the hassle. as i wrote:"so i am removing the portable app and keep using the 91.13.1 version for now hopefully this version does not have too many sec issues".

maybe soon will try a newer version as a clean install on this machine or the next one - TB 102 worked great as a fresh install on a new win11 laptop, with migrated profile folder of 91.13.1

keeping post open for fresh ideas and reply re 91.13.1 sec issues.

thanks again

would appreciate advice re upgrade: 1. do i upgrade from within TB or uninstall, delete folder and then clean install? i remember reading before that when ver 102 came out it was noted cannot be upgraded TO. 2. will the profile folder work in upgraded version?

thanks again

Uninstalls are rarely useful. I do recommend doing a backup of profile, if only for safety. Do it when Thunderbird is not running. I regret you had trouble with portable version; the procedures are different and you didn't share your issues.
