new print system dialog excessively slow

more options

Since the new Firefox browser print system dialog was introduced, replacing the system print dialog panel, the process takes an excessive amount of time to process a print to a device or other interface (especially Preview), compared to the previous version as well as when compared to other browsers, like Safari.

By excessive, I mean 10-30 seconds for anything in the browser; where previously the request was completed in 1-2 seconds.

OS: macOS Sierra (10.12.6) FF: 97.0.1

Mozilla, this problem has bedeviled many users for at least two years, just from the help forum posts.

Someone who is more adept than I, please put some heat to the development folk.

Is there a new fix?

Maybe Firefox will have to be an app that cannot be entirely the same for Mac, Unix, and Windoze. Puhleeze fix the Mac version, somehow.

On my Mac OS 10.12, the Firefox, both previous versions and now in 98.0.2, has the problem. For years, I just used mostly Safari, with Firefox as an occasional welcome alternate. But I cannot install the Apple bloatware OS to upgrade the obsolete Safari, so I now have made Firefox my default browser.

I love it -- as I did earlier apps such as Netscape and long-ago Firefox -- except for this.

To re-state the problem: With any variation of the print command, the Firefox printer interface comes up and the preview window has the infamous spinner. We get: A 30-second delay to show the image. That occurs regardless of web source or file size, except for Firefox help docs. It is 1-2 secs with all other apps, for all files below ~100+mb. Another 30 to refresh after a change, such as custom # of pages. It is 1-2 secs with all other apps and just several pages. Another 30-45 seconds of fast wi-fi for the printer to start clicking. It is 1 to about 15 secs with other apps, depending mostly on the printer's ink status, and file size. That's 90-105 seconds for processes that normally take 5 to 20. And they release the app almost instantly; this app clings and lags.

The "...system dialog..." link is a weak alternative: It's an extra step, it skips the preview that we often need, and there's no handy tool to make it the default.

I saw helpful but complex volunteer tips to fix configs. I did that sort of ...stuff... decades ago in Unix and DOS and early Windoze. NO MORE. All systems are quirky, but _this_ bug is destroying Firefox's sterling reputation.

There's a fundamental problem and it needs a fundamental fix.
