Why can't I speed up the copying of sent mail to the Sent folder
I have read a variety of suggestions and none seem to help. I need answers suitable for someone who is a seasoned user, but isn't a programmer, coder or IT professional. And I could find NO way to register with Mozilla support without asking some sort of question. I migrated from Outlook/Office 2010 with no trouble, and seem to have no trouble connecting to my service provider's server. Sending seems to go fast enough, but copying a small, text-only email to Sent never takes at least half a minute. I would also ask: -How many messages in the Sent folder would you consider to be 'too many?' -If archiving is your suggestion, tell me the preferred method of doing that in Tbird?

lets start with the basic question. What mail provider? Gmail and Outlook/Hotmail are different answers to everyone else. With those providers it is best to simply disable the copy and saving of sent mail.
I rarely use Gmail and never thru a client, don't use Hotmail at all. The only email I get thru Tbird is thru my primary provider, Charter. I checked my Sent folder and found only 115 messages, none older than 2014. I just moved those to a 2014 subfolder under Sent and it seemed to help just a little. Didn't seem like 115 messages were a lot, but I don't know how Tbird feels about that. It has been working at least as good as Outlook ever did, except for the copying of sent messages. I'll watch it for a few days and see what happens. Disabling copy of sent mail doesn't seem like a good option.

Disabling for those two providers is a good idea, as they make the copy for you. Charter does not.
Right click the folder and select compact. The file that those 115 mails were in does not shrink until you do that. If is is a size issue it mat be your anti virus scanning the file that is a part of the delay. Making the file smaller makes the scan faster.
