I'm having a problem with Win 11 that will likely require that I reinstall the OS. I decided to move most of the data in my User folder by right clicking and changing the drive from "C:" to "E:" in the Locations tab. Firefox was closed as a I did this, it worked fine, and then I restarted the PC. Upon opening Firefox none of the extensions are working and I'm not sure what to do.

Recently Firefox always has the error "failed to check for update". I have tried restarting my pc and running as admin. I am on windows 10.

I have been able to manually install the latest version by installing it over the top of my current install, how can I fix the error to be sure that my browser will auto update?

Thanks

Hello.

Lately i found strange bug in FF 119.0 (ppa - deb, not snap version), ubuntu 23.10 I can't download any file to mounted ntfs volume. Firefox instead creates thousands of empty files. Once it was 10001 or 10003 other time it was 20000 of files. I tried private-window, no change. I have removed all add-ons - no change.

For example i was trying to download https://fedorapeople.org/groups/virt/virtio-win/direct-downloads/stable-virtio/virtio-win.iso and i ended with (only few last lines):

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9989.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-998.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9990.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9991.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9992.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9993.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9994.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9995.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9996.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9997.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9998.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9999.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-999.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-99.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest-9.exe -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2023-10-27 22:23 spice-guest-tools-latest.exe

After a crash earlier today within my 32bit install of Firefox, I upgraded to the 64bit version. Since then I have not been able to play videos from sites that utilize DRM.

I have tried the following:

  1. Check and Uncheck "Play DRM content"
  2. Check for updates while in the addons related page.
  3. Checked my hosts file which is blank
  4. Stopped my AV and attempted to update as well as Enable/Disable Play DRM
  5. Get a 404 when attempting to go to "redirector . gvt1 . com" site.

When I looked in my profile directory, I noted that both the "gmp-gmpopenh264" and "gmp-widevinecdm" directories are empty. I found and downloaded the most recent openh264 dll for windows 64bit. Firefox continues to say "OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc. will be installed shortly." I have not found the most recent wildevine version so I have not tried to update it manually.

Could there be something squirrelly with my user profile that needs to be rebuilt? (I can export the bookmarks, etc) The 32bit Firefox crashed with no messages while watching a live YouTube stream. I just installed over without uninstalling the previous version. I was afraid of losing my current settings. The crash caused my "previous session" to be lost.

On Mac OS 14.4 Firefox hangs on launch and crashes, requiring "Force Quit" when I try to Refresh or Troubleshoot. Uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, and restarted computer several times. Have spent several hours trying multiple community suggestions to now avail.

I am not a programmer, but am able to follow instructions. I clearly need someone to hold my hand and walk me through the solution. (I even checked out the Kaspersky suggestion, but cannot install it because Firefox cannot connect to the Internet.)

I have downloaded and saved "Raw Data.docx" and "Application Basics tex.docx" from one of the crash reports.

P.S. On this question form Firefox guessed that my operation system was Mac OS x 10_15_7, but it is 14.4

I've tried restarting the computer, tried running the Mozilla Maintenance Service, and installing the latest updates for Firefox and Windows 11. Nothing I've tried has worked, and no other help article has helped me thus far.

I currently am running FF vers. 109.0.1 64 bit on Win 10 pro. I don't like what I've been reading about the latest update, my machines are old and I'm not ready to upgrade so I don't want an even more overloaded/uses up more CPU, etc., version of Firefox. I don't have complex needs in a browser, so some of the "upgrades" haven't been useful for me or have made using FF more difficult.

I found a list of what I guess are older versions but no information was provided on how to choose a version of say v. 110, to make sure it's the right one for my laptop and/desktop (or the one that will work w/the fewest problems) that it's in English, etc.
My impression is that FF is mostly worked on by people who have a variety of needs & interests so increasing sophistication is what they want and that's fine, I'd like to keep using FF w/my current machines, w/as simple a version ,ie., useful for an unsophisticated user. Is that possible? If so, I'd like to upgrade to 110 64 bit or perhaps 111 64 bit unless either or both had huge security holes, etc and many users found they weren't very functional. I do have security software.

How can I export all firefox settings, passwords, bookmarks, cookies etc.. in clean, human readable text files ?

Hello

I have been using firefox sync for a long time to migrate between PC to PC

My firefox sync profile is full of old stuff and I would like to clean up my settings by wiping out my firefox sync settings and starting fresh.

However, before doing that I wish to export all my data/settings/password/cookies/bookmarks and everything, so files on my computer.

Files that I can read in notepad and inspect. See which settings I have in there and decide which settings I want to put back in my new installation.

I have found a locked question about this on this forum

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1065938

It mentions two plugins for this purpose

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension)

OPIE

Unfortunately and worryingly, they have been removed from the firefox addon store

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/febe/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/opie/

I found a wikipedia article about FEBE

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_Environment_Backup_Extension a very old link to download a probably broken version https://febe.en.softonic.com/

and a reddit thread about FEBE which states that there is no equivalent and that it is not possible to export firefox settings anymore

https://old.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/t2zmjb/febe_alternatives/

as for OPIE, I am unable to find explanation of what it was, where it went or who used it

I know that my profile is stored in

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\4vdt083m.default-release

However the files and structure in that folder are inscrutable

I would like to have control over the settings of my browser, what they are, to save them and modify them on my own terms.

I would like to export about:config completely to a regular plain text file, edit them and import them back in.

I cannot use, update, uninstall, refresh, or reinstall Firefox (and haven't for four or more years). I always get this message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window." But I have (obviously) shut down the computer entirely any number of times in all those years. What can I do? I will be taking college classes and Firefox is one of the few browsers that the college supports.

I am currently having problems with my Firefox browser. For example often if I type something into the google search box at the right of the address bar and hit return nothing happens until I go down and select Bing instead of the google setting. Also in hotmail (I am on a desktop) if I go to reply, the original is now ether twice. This does not happen if I use Google browser. But I prefer Firefox as I have used it for years.

My concern is if I delete Firefox and reinstall it, I may lose some of the settings or bookmarks that I have set over the years.

Any suggestions? Please simple as i am old and not computer savvy.

Your help would be so appreciated. I am currently on Firefox 107.0 (64 bit)

Thanks, Anthony

I cannot find this anywhere. As a Topic . I've Reinstalled Firefox several times, and, each time the Browser continues to Import the previous instalations Bookmarks.

Noticed that a small Dialog box pops up stating what is being installed, with 'Importing Previous Bookmarks". Should be an Option on Instalation that handles exactly what is to be described as installed. Supposed there used to be. Since im used to installing w/o 'default settings.

The little check box that denotes 'use old settings, and apps, does nothing.

Have another problem with my Bookmarks. And this is what I need solved Reinstalling Firefox without Importing Previous Bookmarks.

Options for Migrations is not a punn here.

Hello everyone,

I have a very weird behaviour with one of my Apple MacBook Pro M1 (2020) with macOS 13.3.1 and Firefox. After removing Firefox (trash + remainings in /Library and ~/Library), Firefox is gone... until I reboot. It then reinstalls automatically!

One weird thing I see in Disk Utility is an "Apple UDIF read-only compressed (bzip2) Media" that I cannot delete because it's in currently in use (see screen shots attached).

I can also see it in with diskutil list:

/dev/disk5 (disk image):

  #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
  0: Apple_partition_scheme +391.2 MB disk5
  1: Apple_partition_map 32.3 KB disk5s1
  2: Apple_Driver_ATAPI 4.1 KB disk5s2
  3: Apple_HFSX Firefox 391.1 MB disk5s3

There is no dmg file attached to it, I have no idea where it comes from.

My question is: how can I uninstall Firefox on this computer?

Thank you for any help, Panda

I upgraded from 126.0.1 to 127 today. Upon update, all my windows are gone. The only way I could access them is to revert to an older profile backup and reinstall 126.0.1.

I tried exporting my session with Tab Session Manager in 126.0.1 and reopen them in 127, but that only restores the last tab of each window (oddly). The json clearly lists 3 windows each with multiple tabs. I tried copying the sessionstore-backups folder, but no dice.

I recently "downgraded" from macOS Ventura back to macOS Monterey on my 2019 Macbook Pro. Is there a way to migrate all the Firefox bookmarks and login/password info that I had prior to the downgrade? I made a complete backup of the computer prior to the downgrade, but I can't find any folders with this info on the backup, just the Firefox application. I didn't make the .html or .csv files of the bookmarks or login info prior to the downgrade--didn't think it would require such steps to migrate the old info.

For a long time I've used Firefox on Linux with multiple instances each with their own profile folder. Today when I try to run these instances with separate profile folders I get the following error:

> Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile.

Profiles are created like this:

firefox --new-instance --createprofile "PROFILENAME ~/.firefox-PROFILENAME"

They are run like this:

firefox --new-instance --profile "~/.firefox-PROFILENAME"

It seems something has broken with the instance isolation as this is now throwing an error. Additionally I run "createprofile" it doesn't seem to actually create the folder.
