Empty history menu, address bar still populated and visit counts still exist

After migration my user directory to a different partition, I've lost all the items in my history menu and my places.sqlite file is no longer updating. However I can see in my address bar that all my regular suggestions and recommendations are still there, still auto-completing as they did before and when I visit a site, its visit count is properly bloated. I'm not sure if this is due to account sync but I've disconnected it now. How can I reconcile my files and repopulate my history menu so I can properly search it?

This is my first post here so let me know if I did anything wrong.

So my problem is: my camera has been undetected by Firefox for a while now, without any change in the use of my browser. I've wanted to use it on Google Duo, on an online classes website, on a website where you can use your camera to try on glasses before ordering, and nothing... The latter was my last attempt and the only message I got from the website was "your camera is not detected". I really have no idea where to check for anything wrong on this topic, it works perfectly on other software (like Discord), so I guess it does not come from the camera itself. I checked the authorizations in Firefox, nothing special there either.

Any idea and/or tips for this kind of troubleshooting?

I have a ProtonMail account. (It works fine, I recommend it!) Had it for years, but have not used it much. Looking into VPN and proton offers one, so trying to find out more, and so am now exploring the proton site quite a bit.

I can log into ProtonMail itself very easily; I get directed to my ProtonMail inbox. Cool so far. But clicking on 'help' takes me to ProtonMail Support, in a new tab. Not so cool, because I'm now not logged in. If I hit the 'LOG IN' button at the top of that page, I can log in (again) very easily. But it takes me back to my ProtonMail inbox! Same problem if I try to log in to the Protonmail Blog.

I've tried everything I can think of. I've checked through all the ProtonMail support articles (that claim they are 'step by step guide to find easily your answer'); I've investigated 'Common Login Problems', and none of the offered solutions apply (I'm not having a problem logging in; I'm having a problem logging in to something other than the inbox.) I've tried disabling browser extensions; checked the settings of Javascript, Session Storage, and Cookies; even tried using a different browser.

I think the answer to this conundrum is to configure Firefox -- just for proton -- so that instead of opening a new tab it opens the content in the same tab. But I've searched Firefox help, and have not been able to discover how to do that.

I fear I am slowly but surely going insane.

Please help!

When trying to install addons from Firefox addons management menu (tab 'about:addons'), they not downloads. and Firefox says 'addon can not be loaded because connection problem'.

When trying open 'https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/' have 'PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR'.

I am thinking the reason of this errors is blocking requests to 'addons.mozilla.org' by my internet provider (Beeline Kazakhstan). Because when I trying to connet to 'addons.mozilla.org' using VPN or proxy I have no problems described above.

I have no idea why this internet provider or goverment needs to block host 'addons.mozilla.org' (they love to block various website just fo fun). May you help me bypass this problem? May be you know the way how to install VPN addon offline for Mozilla Firefox whithout acces to addons webpage.

The dialog which asks what to do with the file used to have "Save File" selected by default. This was convenient, because this is usually what I want. However, the default selection has recently changed to "Open with Firefox", which I hardly ever want. This requires me to perform an extra step when accessing PDFs from the Web, which I do quite often. I am not aware of having done anything which would affect this, nor have I found a corresponding option to change it back. How can I restore the previous behaviour?

I contacted GMX and they have been unable to tell me why I can't access their signup page. I had my brother do a test from his home. He's on a different ISP. He is using a VPN, but this worked off VPN too. He is using the same ESR version of Firefox that I am, and he's on the same Windows 10 version I am. Also, he's using the same router I am with the same firmware. He can access the page without issue.

What I've tried;

I do not get this error for any other site. I've been trying to access this page on and off for about 6 months. It doesn't appear to be a temporary error.

Any ideas what might be causing this? thanks

Now, when I'm watching a video or playing audio, this happens. And, it doesn't even get it right most of the time! Like for example, it does this instead! That's not even the page I'm on!

I recently reinstalled Firefox (84.0, 64-bit) and I found that the Top Sites weren't populating. They also couldn't be made to hold a site with the editing tool on each square, and nothing will bookmark.

I found a previous question about this from years ago, which was solved when the questioner verified that the History wasn't being created--it was blank--and the person answering the question said something about removing the "places.sqlite database file", which would then prompt Firefox to create a new file by that name, and track history and populate the Top Sites. An article was mentioned in that solution to help walk through the process, but I didn't see any link or reference to what that article was.

That exact same issue seems to be happening for me--my Top Sites won't load, won't be made to save anything, and I have no History despite the reinstall happening a couple of days ago--and this sounds like the solution may work for me as well but I've no idea where to find it or how to execute the recommended procedure.

Would anyone know where to find that article, or if there's an updated method to tackle the issue?

Related: I have Firefox on my phone and on another computer in the house, and I'd thought they would all sync up to share the same bookmarks, etc., but that hasn't happened. Is this connected to the same issue? Meaning, once the History/Top Sites/bookmark issue is resolved, will doing a Sync actually get my Firefoxes all talking together and sharing the same bookmarks?

I was hoping to re-order the extension icons in my menu bar but it seems like that can't be done (akin to how open tabs can just be re-ordered), so I figured the best thing to do was to remove them and re-populate the menu bar with them in the desired order.

So I didn't uninstall them, but removed them from the menu bar, thinking I could then just put them back in the order I'd like, but I'm not seeing any way to re-insert their icons/shortcuts into the menu bar. Even once they're completely uninstalled and re-installed, they no longer seem to go into the menu bar as per usual, as if they've been earmarked as not belonging there regardless of a whole new re-install.

In brief: Is there any way to get the icon/shortcut for installed extensions back into the menu bar once they've been removed from there?

I was searching on Google how to block file:///C:/ or file:///D:/ because this is dangerous to allow!!! Shocking! And this is still not fixed after years of developments... Why? To keep this allowed makes it too easy for hackers, especially with multiple screens and a shadow/background screens available which can be running in the background, not seen, when hackers do that.. Kind of the way TeamViewer allows help to be provided remotely. Kind of screen sharing. Oh well...

Maybe need lots of complaints from you all to get this changed?..


Try yourselves to use file://C:/ with 2 // and file:///C:/ with 3 // and both are allowing access to the whole file system and any data file. BONKERS??? But why to use 3 /// if 2 // still works? Insider's job or programming conflict? Why would Firefox programmers allow that? I do not understand...

I tried to use selective website blocker, but for file:/// that addon says that the page is not supported... Maybe another type of addon could be developed for this to be blocked and secured once and for all, but not sure if Firefox would allow such an access or such a blocking. May cause issues with Downloads and accessing download folder from within Firefox. HOWEVER, they could block any system or file access from the ADDRESS BAR and SEARCH BAR and then do a work-around solution by developing a special warning 'dialog message' each time when any user (owner or remote user) tries to access forlder to see or use any file. That would be a lot like a guest account requiring password to access special folder or file, or wants to perform an action usually not allowed for a guest user. Password is required for that each time, or at leats a visual confirmation. That would help, I hope...

Would need to re-educate users after this! TOO DANGEROUS TO KEEP THIS IN SUCH A WAY AS IT IS NOW!!!!

DOES FIREFOX TEAM UNDERSTAND THIS? Maybe they forgot about this, maybe they did not figure out how to solve this, or maybe someone from an inside is helping hackers to have a very easy access? Not sure, but this "open doors to all system and data files for anyone" is shocking!


What about business or government people? What about online bullying and harrassment? What about privacy about which Firefox writes so much? Need more complaints to make this a serious issue. So, everyone, please write your own comments or complaints to Firefox and Chrome directly and maybe they will listen. This may take more work than we think, but my ideas may help. What about your ideas? Express them below and maybe they will help as well.


You all can ask them for this to be blocked or solved, so ask. Maybe my ideas will help to get this moving. Write your own to them as well. And Microsoft may need to get involved as well because Firefox, and from what I read, Chrome allows this too... Other browsers may be doing that as well...!!!!!! There are loads of various browsers available!!!! I read something about Windows Policies, but I do not understand what that is...


(( !!! )) If any of you will try any system changes in an attempt to try solving this issue, make sure you are okay to risk with crashed system requiring reinstall or recovery to be used, and then, write down all the changes you do in detail before carrying any further and applying them because that may ruin the system without a way to recover it.

Hello. I can't find my bookmarks after update 76. I followed the directions, and I ouldn't find anything. I searched my computer and all my drives for json files and 'bookmarks', and I found backups from 2001, 2013, and I know I have backups 'older' than those on discs, but the ones missing (so far) are the most important and complete ones from the past 7 years. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but update 76 'seems' to necessitate syncing devices. I only have reason to browse on my desktop, so I didn't plan on syncing it with anything. I 'do' have a smartphone, but other than downloading malwarebytes and one other app, that I need, that's the extent of my 'online' activities on the phone. However, since I couldn't find my bookmarks without doing so, I decided to download Firefox onto my phone and try to sync them up. When I signed up for the Firefox account earlier, I changed my password with a password generator. However, my phone doesn't have all the characters on its keyboard that are in my password. You can customize the keyboard, but it looked like a magnificent pain to do so. Instead, it seemed easier to 'dumb down' my password from 40 characters down to around the minimum, at least until I got them synced. However, I tried twice with typing visible on the phone and it said the password was wrong, so instead of trying a third time, and getting locked out of Firefox - I came here to see if anyone could help me. I know that rebooting often corrects a lot of things, but since I don't have these bookmarks backed up anywhere - I was afraid this might be a case where it may make the bookmarks more difficult or impossible to retrieve.
