Hi All- I am in charge of deploying Firefox ESR to my company and trying to get it to silently auto update on it's on with user interaction. We have policies in place (GPO) that prevent it at this point. I need some guidance on whether I should use just GPOs to manage this or should I go the route of the .cfg file? If someone has a step by step on how to best achieve this I would appreciate it. I am currently using the .msi installer.

Here is settings in an old .cfg file that I am testing with:

lockPref("app.update.mode", 1); lockPref("app.update.service.enabled", true); lockPref("extensions.update.enabled", false); lockPref("extensions.update.autoUpdateEnabled", false);

// Set default homepage - users can change // Requires a complex preference defaultPref("browser.startup.homepage","data:text/plain,browser.startup.homepage=http://workday");

// Don't ask to install the Flash plugin lockPref("plugins.notifyMissingFlash", false);

// Disable Search Engine automatic updates lockPref("browser.search.update", false);

//Disable telemetry lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.prompted", 2); lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.rejected", true); lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.enabled", false);

// Disable health reporter lockPref("datareporting.healthreport.service.enabled", false); lockPref("datareporting.healthreport.logging.consoleEnabled", false); lockPref("datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled", false);

// Disable all data upload (Telemetry and FHR) lockPref("datareporting.policy.dataSubmissionEnabled", false);

// Disable crash reporter lockPref("toolkit.crashreporter.enabled", false); Components.classes["@mozilla.org/toolkit/crash-reporter;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsICrashReporter).submitReports = false;

// Don't show WhatsNew on first run after every update pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone","ignore");

// Don't show 'know your rights' on first run pref("browser.rights.3.shown", true);

Mozilla's website states:

"Numerous features of the kiosk mode are configurable through policy or command line parameters when launching the browser."

However, other than a single example to run kiosk mode as a private window, it doesn't seem to provide any information on how to access such configuration. I couldn't seem to find the information anywhere else either.

How can I configure kiosk mode? Preferably via the CLI, but I'd be interested also to learn what is meant by "configurable through policy".

Trying to block all but allow specific plugins. I have the okta one and the web password filler working, but not the logon assist. I've tried putting in (secret-server-logon-assist-ff57@thycotic.com), and {secret-server-logon-assist-ff57@thycotic.com}, and also without any extras. These codes come from just the numeric URL (ie https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/1747490) which says "Secret Server Login Assist (secret-server-logon-assist-ff57@thycotic.com) is blocked by your system administrator. Extension not on OAI allowed list". Am I misreading this message, or missing something on this specific one?

Hi,

I'm trying to auto enable 2 extensions for my users, and after hours on the issue, I cannot find any fix.

We are using: ESR 91.4 32 bits

I've tried to use: - Group Policy -> ExtensionSettings {

The result is: extension are installed, but always disabled. I have to manually enable them.

Would you have any idea?

I make the Mendeley Firefox plugin available to managed windows 10 workstations by downloading the plugin file to this location on a workstation:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\Firefox Importer\mendeley_web_importer-3.2.65-fx.xpi

and then add a registry setting to the machine as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions] "@mendeleyimporter"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mendeley Desktop\\Firefox Importer\\mendeley_web_importer-3.2.65-fx.xpi"

This method worked for previous versions of Firefox and Mendeley Importer, but for the latest versions of both the plugin no longer appears in Firefox.

No error messages are generated.

Is this method still supported by Firefox?

Thanks Mike

I have been trying to automate setting a homepage for my users. I have tried a number of ways including a script I found but changing the prefs.js on my account doesn't seem to affect Firefox at all. I can append "browser.startup.homepage" in the view:config if I open Firefox locally and that seems to change the homepage as intended but putting it into a script doesn't seem to do anything unfortunately.

I have also tried what's recommended in this guide however that did not help either.

https://smallbusiness.chron.com/change-default-homepage-users-54727.html

Is there a way to do this through regedit or group policy? Preferably a way that still allows the users to change the homepage if they like.

We are taking advantage of the Mozilla.cfg and PrefLock and that works great! Now I am looking for a way to lock down the Applications set in Firefox and I don't seem to be having any luck doing so.

Goal is to lock down the Applications section In Firefox under "General" (See the screenshot). Its currently set to a few default applications we use. These settings seem to change at random depending on user actions, or after browser updates. Is there any way to lock them in place once the settings are set? Would like the settings to stick and we don't want users to have do to anything. Example: If Adobe is set for PDF's, I just want it to always open in Adobe. Maybe grey out the section or something so it cannot be changed if possible.

Thanks!

Firefox for Organizations: best practice to deploy custom config without AD/GPO

Dear community,

we are an international Non-for profit organization with mostly small offices of about 2-10 staff on 3 continents. The majority of those offices does not have IT staff/knowledge, and infrastructure is often sketchy. We use mostly Windows, but have some offices with Linux. We currently use local users, and after an initial configuration of e.g. Firefox/Thunderbird, we don't have any way to intervene automatically.

So we are looking for an efficient way to control software configurations after deployment without the need for manual intervention. The scope would initially not be a lot, mostly installing/uninstalling addons. E.g. if a malicious addon is found, we want to have a way to uninstall it on all devices. Right now, we have to ask all staff to do this, and evidently this doesn't work out all the time.

Firefox and Thunderbird are 2 key programs installed on all devices, although evidently we use other software as well. I think that with TB78 the policies.json implementation might not be yet finished completely, but for now, Firefox would be more critical (also some staff tend to install addons we do not want on the device).

As far as I know, when it comes ways how to centrally manage Firefox/Thunderbird without a domain controller/GPO, there are some options:

1) Azure AD: Identity management, and maybe also ways to configure Thunderbird/Firefox (although Azure AD does not seem to have GPO, but maybe scripts could be executed at the endpoint?). Won't work for Linux I guess. Also Azure could be based in a US datacenter, and as an European NGO we have much less data protection for US-based data.

2) third party management tool (e.g. like Teamviewer remote management, or chocolately) which allows remote execution of scripts. We could update the policies.json file in the firefox profile via a chocolately/Teamviewer script to uninstall/install addons, etc. Not sure if chocolately works on Linux.

3) GPOs with Domain Controller after all via a pre-auth VPN. Won't work for Linux I guess, but maybe script to deploy policies.json. Also there would be yet another thing to potentially fail (VPN connection), and we would need 2 different deployment methods (GPO for Windows, scripts for Linux).

4) write an Firefox/Thunderbird addon which simply downloads a policies.json file from a central location, and places it in the users FF/TB profile folder. upon restart of FF/TB it should deploy the changes based on the new policies.json file. A bit cumbersome, and doesn't cover other software.

5) a simple bat/sh script which is executed upon start.

To me, it seems a third party tool (teamviewer, chocolately) seems the best option, as it could cover FF/TB, but also other software which is installed.

Before we proceed I would like to know of experiences, and best practices: could anybody provide some information how this was achieved?

kind regards,

To whom who can help,

I am attempting to hard code the homepage for Mozilla Firefox so that it opens only a specific page when Mozilla is started. I am aware with how to achieve this by going into the Mozilla settings in the browser, however id like to make this change on a deep configuration level so that it cannot be changed by end users.

I have achieved success with doing it on Google Chrome using a "master preferences" file which was imported into Google Chrome's program files folder and I would like to know if anyone can help me achieve the same with Mozilla. Our end goal is to put this working solution on an image and distribute new computers with pre configured Mozilla settings unchangeable by the end user.

Also, just as background, I have attempted to google the solution or see if there were any configuration files out there I could alter to my liking but I haven't been able to find any.

Thanks in advance for any help.

We have Firefox deployed to hundreds of workstations in a domain environment. We would like to control local site data storage, such as setting the amount of local site data storage can be used, which sites can store local data, or just have Firefox delete site data when closed.

We use Firefox .cfg file to set different options, such as this: // Set cache size limit clearPref("browser.cache.disk.capacity") lockPref("browser.cache.disk.capacity", 10240);

But we cannot find an option to control site data. Is there any configuration for controlling local site data that we can deploy to all users/installations?

Thanks!

Good morning all

We are trying to put Firefox (already installed) as the default internet browser (currently IE 11) on our fleet of machines under Windows 7.

I found a Microsoft solution which consists of modifying two values in the registry:

HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Shell \ Associations \ UrlAssociations \ http (and https) at a minimum.

Concretely, the web shortcuts open well with Firefox, however when we go to menu, Firefox options, it is not considered as the default browser. (unhappy smiley: D)

And I don't want users to click on it themselves)

My question is the following, is there an easy way to change it to the default browser by GPO firefox? (which reproduces the click on this button)

Or a list of things to do in the registry to reproduce clicking on the button to set Firefox by default in the menu, options.

I did a regshot before and after clicking on this button, and compared, but it seems quite tedious to me (Keys added: 125, Values added: 113, and some modified values)

Thank you in advance to all
