A Tab always seems to open. Why?
Windows 8.
When I open anything on Firefos, a new tab pops up with "desktop" screen. Why? I don't want it.

The new tab is transparent and shows your Windows desktop, or it has some content that resembles your Windows desktop?
In a couple of other recent threads, extra tabs were attributed to a "speed dial" type extension. Try this:
Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or remove.)
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any improvement?

Thanks. Solved the problem. Found features I didn't know were available.
