Firefox can't find my location

more options

Firefox recently updated itself to the newest version. I don't know which version that was because I already uninstalled it and installed an older version, which does not have the problem the new version has. And that problem is that Firefox no longer can determine my location. A weather site and a hotel that wanted to obtain my location were not able to with the new version of FF.

These sites work on IE and they work with my now-installed older version. There used to be a small popup that would ask if it was ok if Firefox shared my location, but this popup no longer appears. Believe me I tried a great many things to fix it, all of which did not work. But installing an older version works just great. Anybody else having this problem? Any fixes?

Hello, can you get the Popup Asking for your location on New version of Firefox? If yes then please Try entering your zip code then click Add. It'll ask you depending on your location.

We strongly recommend you to upgrade to Latest version of Firefox.

You can inspect and manage the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:

  • Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar
  • Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
  • Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

You can inspect and manage the permissions for all domains on the about:permissions page.

It's not a problem with the website; it's a problem with Firefox. I can provide my location using the old version of FF that I now have installed. IE also can share my location. It's the new version of FF where this function does not work.

more options

There are no popups asking for a zip code - the usual popup asking if it's okay to share my location also doesn't show as it used to. Besides, as I travel for work, I may be in different places, so I need FF to determine and share my location - I can't always provide a zip code.

I'm talking about the function of Firefox (and other browsers) that finds your location and shares it with the requesting website. That's what doesn't work in the new version of Firefox. I'm not going to use a new version of Firefox if its functionality is broken, as this version clearly is. As I said, after experiencing this odd problem, I deleted the updated FF, and installed an older version where the location-finder works just fine. This functionality also still works in IE. It worked in my version of FF before the upgrade. This is why I don't recommend allowing auto updates - they end up breaking your computer.

Please update to Firefox 27.0.1. Then we can work to make sure that everything works, the location service works in that version so it's just something that must be messed up on your install. After updating, Reset Firefox, Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

I've been having the same problem. I'm also using version 27.0.1. I've tried resetting firefox, which did not solve the problem and I've also completely uninstalled firefox and all profile data and reinstalled from scratch but still no luck.

Disabling and then enabling my sensor did not work either.

Same here Rob - I've tried everything. Tonight I deleted Firefox and all data and reinstalled the 27.0.whatever, and restarted it. Guess what? Location aware still doesn't work. I'd also tried a reset and monkeying with various settings.

The microsoft sensor thing didn't work for me because (a) I have no sensors in the computer; and (b) IE location aware browsing works fine. It's just FF that doesn't work.

Rob, downgrading worked for me before, so that's what I'm doing. Check out a site like oldversion dot com to get an older version of FF that will work properly. Take it easy.

Is geo.enabled set to true on the about:config page?

more options

Yes geo whatever is enabled. I have already been around the intertubes looking for a solution. I have found at least one other guy who has posted to this forum with the same problem. My guess is that many others are affected, but because few people use location sensitive browsing, they don't know they have a problem.

Hello,

Can you provide a domain where this is not working so that I may test this? I am running the latest version and I've had websites ask for and gain location access to my computer.

Thanks,

more options

@chuckles+manson: yea looks like I'll have to downgrade til It's figured out. I've installed a sensor but it still doesn't work in firefox on those websites. Although, I haven't had any trouble in my other browsers, but I use firefox 98% of the time.

@cor-el: yes geo.enabled is set to true

@PlunkettScott: google maps, and map quest are two sites that won't find my location, however there have been others, just can't think of them at the moment.

cor-el, what are these websites and add-ons you referenced, and how do they work, and what do they have to do with the fact that Firefox's location finder doesn't work, but location does work on my other browsers? I'm really looking for a succinct answer to my problem, not to run around in circles. At this point I've re-installed FF 27.0.1 twice, and it doesn't work properly. I've found 2 others in these forums with the same issue. There doesn't appear to be a solution at this time. I'm going to stop posting and checking this forum for a few days; meanwhile, I will install an older version of FF.

In your Address bar, next to the Back button, do you have something similar to the round icon attached? If you do, click it and allow whatever website you are on to see your location (You'll need to be running Firefox 27.0.1 or 28 that comes out tomorrow)

Is this a problem with geolocation and Firefox not asking for permission or don't you get the correct location and is your location reported wrongly?

If geolocation isn't used then website use a reverse DNS lookup of your IP to find your location and this location will depend upon where your ISP locates you.
If geolocation is used and allowed then this only works properly if you connect via a hotspot with a known location.

Please read my question again. It is quite simple. A function that used to work in FF quit working after the 27.0.1 upgrade. This same function continues to work properly in other browsers on my computer. It also works in FF *if* I downgrade to an older version of FF. There are no target icons or anything else I've failed to do. The feature simply doesn't work in FF on my computer.

To attempt a response to the question above, the answer is "It is a problem with FF not asking for permission." It doesn't do anything when I try to geolocate. The feature simply doesn't work in this version of FF - it's as if the feature didn't exist at all. Clicking on "find location" in various websites leads to the little wheel spinning and nothing happening.

Man I don't want to say this, but I upgraded to vers. 28.0.0, and now the location finder comes on, but doesn't find the correct location. FYI, things still work on IE. I'm downgrading tonight for a long time while y'all figure this mess out.
