Bookmarking is difficult if one has 30+ folders of bookmarks. Is there a way to see the whole list when you begin the bookmarking process?

Firefox itself is written in a confusing blend of C++, JavaScript, XML, and web technologies, but modifying the appearance would be done using CSS. Much of the interface is easy to modify, but the "tree" controls used for hierarchies like bookmarks are more obtuse.

To find examples of modifying the UI, you could search this site for posts containing the magic phrase that normally appears as part of the namespace at the beginning of UI rules:

Hello,

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
    • Click the Firefox button to open the menu and click on Bookmarks.
    • Click the Bookmarks menu and click on Show All Bookmarks.
  2. At the top of the Library window, click the "Import and Backup" menu and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

I am familiar with bookmarks. The earlier versions, back in 2004 or so, had a different bookmarking process. The current one gives two choices. I want to put the bookmark directly into one of my many folders. It is now a 3 or 4 step process. Why cannot we see all our bookmark folders when we bookmark a new page?

Try using this extension to expand the size of the add new bookmark window.

No. It did not list all the folders I have (about 30).

I know about bookmarks. What I want is a simple way to add a bookmark, in one click, to any of 30+ folders. In earlier versions of Firefox (2004 or earlier), that was the way it was done. Click "bookmark this page" and that small window appeared, but it allowed me to choose any of the folders in my bookmarks file. The current method requires five or six steps to put the new bookmark where it belongs.

You can click in the star at the address bar:

bookmarks-win2

There you can select the name, folder and tags.

Hi nantucketbob, you should be able to browse all your folders by clicking the "v"-like button on the far right side of the Folder line. I have attached a screen shot showing what I mean.

The extension the-edmeister linked to in his post above is designed to expand the folder list automatically so you don't need to click that button every time.

Does that get you to the list you want?

Clicking the down arrow does not bring up ALL the folders, just the ones recently used. That window may not be working correctly, but it has been that way for the past few versions of Firefox.

I reinstalled it again. Not working. Cannot see all my folders, just two.

If someone has several bookmark folders, and would be so kind as to take a screenshot of a properly-working bookmark window, one that shows all their folders, it would be encouraging. Then i would know that something is wrong, not that the bookmarks process was poorly implemented.

Note that there are two such buttons.

One is inside the folder field and that one opens the most recently used folders.
But there is a second button outside the folder field at the far right that may be hard to notice.
That second button should open the full folder list.

I made a screenshot of my bookmarks window. I am using version 26.0

Clicking any down-arrow shows only the most recent folders used.

Clicking the second button should open a pop-up with the full folder list.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

You can also check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

The solid triangle down arrow displays recently used bookmarks.
The V to right displays all of the bookmarks folders.
This displays the book marks folder structure as it was when last used.

  • Do you have nested folders ?
  • You may need to expand the upper tier of folders

Hi nantucketbob, your screen shot looks like Windows XP, but you are running Windows 7? Are using a theme for that and If so, which one? If it's not a theme, is Firefox running in some kind of special compatibility mode or in an XP Mode VM?

more options

I am using Windows 7, no special theme, just a straight download from Firefox. Are you saying something is amiss? That the full list of folders should show up when I bookmark?
