Firefox sometimes freezes up my computer when I go on certain sites for about 10 seconds, and the whole time my hard drive light is on.

This has been happening since I went from firefox 3.6 to firefox 18 when it came out to the 23.0.1 I have right now. When I go on some specific heavy websites such as yahoo news, the browser and my computer will lock up for about 10 seconds while my hard drive light is on the whole time, and the only info about:crashes gives me is a link to a page called throttling, which apparently doesnt exist anymore. It happens whether its on manual or automatic cache size and only seems to happen when its at max cache. According to about:crashes it happened only 4 times before I went from 3.6 to 18.

Ive tried turning almost all of my addons off and that didnt work, ive had harware acceleration off for a really long time so its not that. I always have all my plugins turned off except flash and it doesnt seem to have anything to do with flash. The firefox health report also counts it as a crash.

I actually worked out that its almost always the comment system on pages on websites such as disqus. Im blocking them as I come across them with ghostery and adblocker element hider.

Can you give us the crash ID for some of these crashes? That will help!

  1. Enter about:crashes in the address bar (that's where you enter your website URL) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent crash ID's that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your response here.

Thank you for your help!

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

I didnt know you could do this with reports, I tried before but it just took me to random urls. It seems to be a flash hang, but I dont get it on youtube or other video sites. Is there anyway to fix it?

Have you turned off Hardware Acceleration off in Flash, too?
Please see this Adobe help article to learn how to do that.

That is a problem with the Flash plugin.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I Have as well this problem. More precisely, I clear the cache and everything when I close Firefox. The first time I call some pages, Firefox freezes for a while, and freezes all the computer (the mouse does not react). The disk activity is huge. The second time I call the page, it appears quickly without any problem. This happens on several computers I use (Windows Vista, 7 and 8). I use as well a Windows XP computer. On this one, the problem does not happen. The loading of the website is very long but does not freeze the computer. But this XP machine uses as well a complicated and slow web connection. May be this is related to the cache. Loading the cache can be long is the website is badly optimized, but should not freeze the computer.
