This isn't really a question, but I hope it will help some people. I had the bing toolbar appear at the top of firefox, and I tried every suggestion I found to delete it, in addition to ways I already knew. Nothing worked...until I searched through tools/options and found my home page had been changed. I simply changed it back to what it was before bing took over. Now everything is back to normal.

Hi I don't know if I'm at the right place or not, but this thread seems to be the closest to my problem, which is this (see image):

Every time I type in something into the URL (location/address) bar, the first options shown are search results by Bing.

Now the funny thing is, that it is the ONLY symptom that my system exhibits in connection with the blasted Bing. There is no extra toolbar, no default search engine change, no default homepage change, it's not taking over my new tabs; it is not anywhere among the add-ons etc. (I guess you'd say I'm lucky for that, but "just ignore it" is definitely not the answer I'm looking for.)

I have tried about 8-10 different solutions posted on different forums, but nothing helped. I did the "Manage Search Engines" thing; I looked around the Add-ons & Extensions for anything remotely suspicious; I tried the keyword.URL solution; I went to System32 folder to change the hosts file (hell, I don't even know what that is); I even reinstalled Firefox from the Mozilla homepage (!), and nothing happened.

So what now...? Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

the search reset addon might also help other users in a similar situation - it will revert the most common customizations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

In several sessions, I tried everything I saw on the net about getting rid of Bing from my FireFox but finally determined that an Add-on called "Default Tab 2.0" was causing my problem.

I'd of course looked and seen that Add-on but assumed it was something that came along with FireFox itself.

When I clicked on More on that Add-on though, I saw the homepage was http:/mysearchresults.com/ and when I did some web searches for that, found out it is Adware or Malware which, in my case, caused Bing to act like "The Terminator" (ie. nothing would get rid of it).

I was so mad about this that I nearly switched to Google Chrome but I now realize it had nothing to do with Mozilla having gone over to the Dark Side of the Force so to speak.

I feel a bit like an idiot for how long it took me to find this and how much barking up the wrong tree I did but I guess we are all learning new things all the time.

So you're saying that with Default Tab installed, you couldn't uninstall Bing? Or your homepage wouldn't change?

It was blocked because of an install problem. It was not blocked because of its functionality. 2.0 will not be blocked. If you believe that Default Tab has a specific problem that is impacting users, you should open a bug for that. Default Tab is installed as part of third party installers and a user has to confirm it's installation as it does any other third party add-on.

yes i understand now, same thing you told me @bugzilla

Hi mkaply. I attach a screenshot of what I was seeing. If that search box was my homepage then I suppose the answer is that my homepage wouldn't change. In any event, it had me fooled and I thought Bing had been made my default search engine and I'm hoping I can spare some other people all the hassle this caused me - much of which was related to trying the various fixes that people were suggesting including uninstalling and re-installing FireFox. And yes, I am going to be more careful about disabling the installation of third party add-ons in the future. Thanks for your input here.

Sorry this confused you. Default Tab has been changed so you have to confirm the add-on when it is installed.

I DO NOT like bing. I installed it and it wanted me to install other programs such as flash player; ok, I know flash player very well but when I was directed to the site and downloaded it my virus protector went haywire. "Malware detected!" in big bold red letters. "Closing the program", It was the very same flash player bing directed me to.Then it took forever to get rid of bing when I opened a new tab. Ty philipp for the suggestion. It worked great.

hello halmaig, this is likely caused by a conduit-based extension.

Hi philipp,

following your advice, I went to that section, and tried reseting Firefox. To my greatest amazement, it worked like a charm.

Thanks a lot!

I am having the same problem which started 2 days ago. Even when I know my URL address it still brings me to Bing.

How do I get rid of this.

I have been sadly disappointed in FireFox performance lately and now this. As much as I like it maybe it is time to change.

Hello, marlsrssoftball have you tried the suggestions above, the next version of firefox (v23) will introduce consolidated searches, which help prevent search hijackers better.

Hi Everybody,

My original post was related to "Default Tab 2.0" which I was able to get rid of. Now though, I'm having a similar problem with something called "KeyBar 1.8 Customized Web Search" which is related to an outfit called Conduit.

I ended up with it (and several other things installed) when I downloaded Skype and absently clicked OK to some questions I shouldn't have.

There are various solutions indicated for getting rid of "KeyBar 1.8 Customized Web Search" but I haven't yet tried "resetting FireFox to default settings" because I was worried about losing some stuff I didn't want to lose.

I guess I'll try that next.

OK. I seem to have gotten "KeyBar 1.8 Customized Web Search" out of my hair. In this case, it took two things to do so although I should probably mention that several steps back I had uninstalled it via Control Panel but that hadn't done the job:

(1) Went into Tools + Options + General and saw that my Home Page had been changed to a URL related to KeyBar 1.8. So, I then clicked on "Restore to Default" which gave me the Mozilla FireFox Start Page.

(2) Clicked the down arrow to the left of "KeyBar 1.8 Customized Web Search" and changed the search tool back to Google. I wish I could get rid of it altogether an option in here but it shouldn't cause me any problems if that's all that it is.

The below link provided a fair amount of info about KeyBar 1.8 but I'm glad I didn't proceed with the "manual removal" method suggested in there:

Thankyou Waka_Flocka_Flame. After checking out AdwCleaner on CNET below, I decided to give it a try:

http://download.cnet.com/AdwCleaner/3000-7786_4-75851221.html

It certainly seemed to locate a whole pile of stuff, most of which looked like stuff I didn't want so I proceeded with deleting it all. Afterwards, KeyBar 1.8 didn't even show up as a Search option under FireFox which is good.

Upon reboot though, I got the annoying messages below (another problem I failed to make not of in my prior post):

OtShot - Unable to Load Skin
OtShot - Would you like to import your contacts from Outlook

Yet, I then located the below which helped me get rid of it as well:

Ironically, all of this started when I went to install Skype on my PC after having easily done so on my smart phone. Yet, for reasons unknown, Skype wouldn't install - although I had aborted the install when I realized all this other crud was being installed - so I'm really saying it wouldn't install after I'd aborted the initial installation.

Yet, I just tried again and, with the crud removed, Skype went through the install process this time. I was careful to click on "decline" on all of the other stuff which, the first time around, I thought was part of Skype.

So now I can communicate with my daughter who flew off to Singapore yesterday.

Yes I did. I reset Firefox and it cleared up the problem. It seems that I have to do a lot of resetting over the last 6 mos or so. In all the years that I have been using Firefox I have never had to reset Firefox. Lately I have to do it at least once a week or so.
